It seems that middle east was a mess in the time: Powers: -Fatimid caliphate in egypt and syria

-Buyid emirate of Irak (controlling the abassid caliph, that didn't have any real power). The buyid emir had little power over his generals however.

- The hamdanid emirate of mosul was independent de facto, and sometimes vassal of the buyids(and the caliph).

-Damascus was under a turkish ex-buyid general (Alptakin) , that attacked the fatimids a year before the byzantine invasion. Dont know it was independent, or vassal of the buyids or fatimids at the time of the invasion.
