jambas or jambos?[edit]

On my campus the identification plate for this plant reads "jambas", and most Chinese sources use the same specific epithet. However, both epithet results in many search hits. I don't know what site is the authoritative source for plant taxonomy, but at least in these pages: http://zipcodezoo.com/Plants/S/Syzygium_jambas/ http://zipcodezoo.com/Plants/S/Syzygium_jambos/ Description was given for both names. And strangely, part of the text in the 'Description' section is almost entirely identical. I'm a bit confused as to which is the 'correct' epithet, or is both correct, If the latter is the case, then which one comes first? E-Ping Rau (talk) 04:15, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

zipcodezoo is not a reliable source. "jambas" is a spelling error/variant - "lapsus" as we'd say in zoology, "orthographic variant" ("orth. var.", you may have seen this in other articles) as we'd say in botany.
But I am not sure whether "jambas" was at all used in a scientific work, or simply is an Internet mis-spelling. In the former case we ought to list it, in the latter we may or may not depending how widespread it is. There is no harm listing it if it's not only on zipcodezoo, but when listing it don't forget to make a redirect to the actual article. Thanks!
(For "official" orth. var.'s, authors are sometimes given (the author who first made the mis-spelling). On Wikipedia, we haven't done this, because these names are not technically valid (basically a nomen nudum, but even less so), and listing the author makes it harder for the casual reader to recognize this.)
