alternate names in lead[edit]

Not to open this can of worms any further, but why is the Italian name in the lead? I understand the reasoning behind all the others but why Italian? (As far as I know we've never been occupied by Italy...) K. Lásztocska 16:57, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Approximate pronunciation[edit]

If you really must add this, make it useful: how is the 'g' pronounced, for example? -- 07:24, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hard "g", as in "golf" or "goon". K. Lásztocska 20:22, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, i know that, but English spelling alone does not and can not convey that fact. It still isn't absolutely clear how to pronounce the 'e's, for example, and i do not see how this adds to the IPA transcription. I would be happier if it were being added by a registered user.
Why would you want to aim to pronounce a word approximately, anyway? -- 09:45, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Why would you want to aim to pronounce a word approximately, anyway?"- so then why have the IPA pronunciation? Few people bother to find out what all the different symbols actually mean. The "approximate" pronounciation makes it easier. Secondly if the e was prounouced ee, and the g pronounced j as suggested above, then the approximate pronounciation would be written as See-jeed. Name[edit]

Even if we keep all other names, I don't think Bulgarians and Slovaks lived here in the past in large numbers. And we don't mention Armenian, Rusyn, Hebrew etc. names that might be relevant even today. Squash Racket (talk) 15:13, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The town was part of the Bulgarian Empire. There used to be a significant Slovak minority settled in the town after the Ottoman Wars. Tankred (talk) 15:19, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You have a source for the "significant Slovak minority" living here? Squash Racket (talk) 15:24, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I as a random reader would say that listing all the names in different languages in this article is completely redundant. Almost all of them are really similar, sound the same and are nothing more than how any native speaker would immediately spell the name in their (modern) language. If this city is important to certain countries, there will be links to wikis in other languages which will show the alternative spellings.

Paprika photo[edit]

Can someone arrange the photos so that the photo of the paprika capsicum fruits is next to the mention of paprika in the article? Badagnani (talk) 00:44, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
