I have to say this is a strange choice for an article on the main page. As far as I can tell, this boosterish article is about a Bengali family that claims several more clearly illustrious members, and other more debatably notable ones. In any case, there are POV and sourcing problems riddled through the article starting from the first line - what on earth does it mean that this family "exercised the greatest influence in reawakening the Bengali spirit", and is it solid fact that they did so? Likely candidate for afd if it were not on the main page Bwithh 04:56, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for removing the tags at the top and also for the assistance in improving the article. I will be working to improve the article further, particulalrly as per guidelines provided. Good article[edit]

First line[edit]

First line is still problematic:"The Tagore family, with over three hundred years of history, has been one of the leading families of Kolkata, which exercised great influence on the Bengali culture, reawakened by the renaissance". This needs context - did this family become famous only during the renaissance or before that? is this intending to say that the renaissance lasted 300 years? "influence" and "culture" and "one of the leading families" are vague and could be more precise Bwithh 00:35, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for removing the tags. The Tagore family is so highly respected in Bengal that it hurts to see it being tagged like that. It is nice to see it clean. Regarding the objections raised - (1) The first two sentences are covered by the reference to Chitra Deb's article, as I have also read it. Therefore, the 'citations needed' is unnecessary. (2) I think that David Kopf's quote in the first paragraph should be shifted to the section on Environment. However, Bwithh can decide on this. (3) I have clarified the point about Bengal Renaissance in the article itself. -- Seejee 05:20, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Query about Jorasanko[edit]

I just changed the subheading "Jorasanko house" to "The House of Jorasanko" as the section underneath describes a "house" in the sense of a distinguished family rather than an actual physical location/family home. However, I see that the subsection "Jorasanko environment" talks of Jorasanko as if it is a physical family home/location. Which is it? Perhaps these two sections can be merged? Also "House" in the usage of "distinguished family" seem to generally only to apply to royal families. See Royal_House. If the term "House of Jorasanko" is commonly used anyway (needs reference), that's fine though. As a sidenote, the House of Windsor is a royal family which is named after its family home, but this is unusual, and was only done due to special political circumstances Bwithh 22:50, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To avoid confusion I have changed the heading to "The Jorasanko Family". Actually, the Tagores lived in a big house in the Jorasnko locality of north Kolkata. It was called "Thakur Bari" in Bengali. That translates as "Tagore House". It now houses Rabindra Bharati University but continues to be called "Thakur Bari".
