Birth year[edit]

Some (maybe) incorrect information[edit]

1) The article refers to his wife's name as being "Tanya Asad" and the PhD Thesis corroborates this, but page 11-12 of Hussein Agrama's Questioning Secularism refers to her as "Tanya Baker". They seem to be the same person, but the surname is different.

2) Under the "Formations of the Secular" section, the September 11 attackds are mentioned directly as being part of what propelled Asad to write that book, but he himself has said "Virtually everything except the introduction was written before 9/11, including the Egypt chapter." (Google the quote for a reference in Powers of the Secular Modern.)

3) The categories list him as a Muslim, but it's not clear if he views himself as one. He says "my loss of faith" in https://read.dukeupress.edu/the-minnesota-review/article/2011/77/87-100/67732, but later speaks about tsaking part in Islamic rituals at https://www.academia.edu/36002570/Interview_with_Talal_Asad .

"She would always leave instructions in Jeddah for me to perform ‘ umra before I came to her, so I did, dutifully. So I have done about ten of them or so. (One of these days I would like to go for Hajj, in shā’ allāh, with some friends of mine.)"

Cantwell-Smith as an influence[edit]
