Disagree: The original Digimon Battle Pets by Bandai had "Digi-eggs" or "Digi-tamas," but they're by no means Tamagotchis. The Digimon Battle Pets were more of a "boys' alternative" to the seemingly girly Tamagotchis back in the day. --Gear-Richie 06:53, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

I think the English translation of Tamagotchi is wrong. First of all, the word for watch in Japanese is tokee. That or the textbook I've been reading from is wrong. (Genki: An Introductory Course to Elementary Japanese) So watch can't be part of the translation. Isn't it supposed to be "loveable"? Kaishin

A lot of Japanese words adopt from the English. It's likely that the original Japanese is "tokee", but "wotchi" would be understandable also. - Vague | Rant 01:39, Dec 21, 2004 (UTC)

The romanization of that word is "toki" pronounced "toh kee". That word means Time, Hour, or Occasion. "tokei" is Watch or Clock. To romanize the word, you can't use "wo" because that's the Direct Object article and is correctly romanized as "w(o)". There is no "wo" character. To romanize the sounds of "Watch" you have to use these katakana characters: U O tsu CHI, romanized as UOTCHI. In this case, the O sound by itself is a short O. May I suggest a section in this article on the ethics/philosophy/sociology perspectives on this toy?. Any specific critiques would be interesting (I think I remember reading about some schools in the UK banning them!). Alternatively, a link to a relevant article on this subject would be useful. Clean Up Time!!!

Allow me to express my concerns for this article:

Take out all references to "You," such as "you would be able to take care of them. Replace this with words like "user," "owner," "care taker," "idiotic slave," etc. This is a formal encyclopedia article, not a 4th grade essay =) (ALMOST DONE)

Take out all past tense verbs, like was, were, had, etc. and replace them with present tense like is, am, have, etc. Unless it was something that happened in the past, like dates and past announcements and such. Remember, Just because it was built in the past, doesn't mean it still cant dunction like it used it. (DONE)

Take out all the helpful Tamagotchi tips, like the codes for the Connections and such. Like stated above in a few places, this is an encyclopedia article, not a help guide for new Tamagotchi users too lazy to look for tips themselves. (WILL NEVER BE DONE)

This is optional, but I think we should pick the notable Tamagotchi releases, which are those that had some kind of decent impact on the virtual pet industry, and keep those; the rest we can add in a seperate article titled "List of Tamagotchi releases." This will make the article much smaller, more straight to the point, and make it look a little better. (WORKING ON IT)

If there's anything else that needs to be done, please put it down... I will do my best to try and do some major editing when I get home from the Anime Expo =D

Connection V3 glitches?

Someone put on the page that V3's are notorious for the numerous amount of glitches... can someone please verify this and list some examples? SuperDT 19:39, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

There are no known glitches that I can see. I have a Version 3, and all it did was when the new generation came along and my adult character was gone, some of the souvenirs deactivated. But I had written down the passwords I got off Tamatown, so I put them back in, and they re-activated all over again. I don't know why they deactivate, maybe it's a way for Bandai to get kids on the website again thinking they need to get "new" passwords? One friend said she had stuff disappear between her 10 Version 3s, but I told her if you give food presents, they will eat them right as soon as they get them. I've passed items between my 2 Version 2s without problems. Pronunciation

is it just me, or is "ta-ma-GAH-chee" the "short 'O'" variant, whereas "a-a-choo" should be LONG WTF!

In some places(namely the U.S.), we pronounced it GAH; in almost every other place, it's pronounced GOH or GO.

Because of the way the Japanese is romanized, the kana would be ta ma go (which is a voiced KO character) and then what I would call a lowercase tsu - this means to double the next consonant sound and then chi. Hence, tamagotchi. It could have been written as tamago-chi, as is done in a recent CMX translated manga publication - Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, in which the author expresses thanks to "Arina-chi" and that's how the editors in the English edition write it. It could have easily been "Arinatchi". I've asked one penpal in Japan about the "-chi" suffix, and she says most people use it because it's cute. It's been around before the Bandai toy was invented, so that's why it got the "tchi" suffix. It's Bandai America's goof in their commercials in which they say it incorrectly - perhaps a staff of gaijin ignorant of how the word is correctly pronounced. Everyone I come in contact with in the general public get my lesson as to why the way they say it is wrong, and it is a long O. It's not "We here in the U.S." saying it one way - it's people uninformed about Japanese saying it wrong. So please, whomever is changing the fix I keep putting in, stop removing it. I'm right about this and I will check on it from time to time to keep the right information up there. Just because one person makes an error doesn't mean it should be perpetuated. Tamagotch?

I was just curious: why are most of the names missing the "i", thus spelt tamagotch?

I'm not exactly sure, I imagine is has to do with the fact sometimes syllables are "whispered" in Japanese... for example, "desu" is not "de-soo" it's more like "dess". I guess they drop the "i" all the time because of that, and also to make it match up with "watch" more closely. Watch/gotch? That's my thoughts on it. This is why it's important that whoever keeps adding "i" to the end of tamagotch on this article needs to STOP doing it, because that is not how it is spelled on the Japanese packaging. 70.160.248.98 19:24, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Ok I saw the Japanese packaging, but shouldn't we put the Japanese name in parenthesis, e.x. "Tamagotchi(Tamagotch)" or "Ocean Tamagotchi(Umi no Tamagotch)?"

It was always called a TAMAGOTCHI so I have no idea where you got the idea that it was TAMAGUCHI because it is not I would also now because I have them hanging around my neck right now and they say TAMAGOTCHI on the front

Tamaguchi was the media's way of pronouncing/spelling Tamagotchi back when they were being criticized for making our kids stupider... much like how parents would call Pokemon "Pokeman" =)

Creator Of Tamagotchi

I believe you have the name wrong on the original creator of Tamagotchi. I spent some time with a Mr. Iwashima of Nagoya, Japan who seems to be the original creator of the Tamagotchi. He owned a small gadget company and made the first and second tamagotchi himself, contractiong out the actual production to chinese factories. He sold the toys to bandai for the first and second editions, then I believe he sold the Tamagotchi name to Bandai, when he retired. He even had a golden tamagotchi in his house presented to him by Bandai, and also seveal boxes of origanl production run Tamagotchis. I'm interested in who Iwashima is more than Maita. I did a google search for "Iwashima creator of Tamagotchi" and "Iwashima maker of Tamagotchi" and came up with ZERO results for both, but if I replaced Iwashima with Maita, I get loads of articles on him(Maita). For the "maker" of Tamagotchi, Iwashima sure isn't that popular to Google... SuperDT 20:40, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup

I have tagged this article for cleanup. The grammar is horrible and most of the text is so geared toward fans that it is completely unintelligible. For instance:

"Digimon had five different generations, each one with different evolutions but with the same functions.It then had a series of v-pets called Pendulums which introduced Jogress and another stage: Ultimate. It also came out with the pendulum progress, the pendulum x, and the Digimon Accel. It is soon to have a Digimon Mini."

Huh?? What does any of that mean?

What is an evolution?
How are they different but with all the same functions?
What are v-pets? This is the only mention of them in the entire article.
What the hell is Jogress?
What is Ultimate stage?
What is a pendulum progress or a pendulum x? And if those names are some kind of title or brand, why aren't they capitalized?
What is this "it" referring to? ("It then had a series...it also came out with...it is soon to have...) If the "it" is referring to Digimon, then I have to point out that Digimon didn't "come out with" anything; Digimon is the product, not the creator.

These same problems are in every section of the article; it is in need of major cleanup by someone who knows more about the topic than I do. I'm willing to help fix some of the grammar issues, but I don't even know where to begin with the rest. Kafziel 12:54, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Ok I cleaned up the Digimon section... any other sections?

Practically all of the other sections need work. Just picking another one at random, here's "Tamagotchi plus":

- The newest version, released in Japan on March 20, 2004, U.S. on August 15, 2004 and Australia on June 14, 2005 as Tamagotchi Connection.
- Includes characters from the original Tamagotchi as well as new characters never before seen.
- Implements an infrared port to connect to other Tamagotchi to "make friends" and also breed and create a new generation of Tamagotchi, similar to the direct-connection feature on osutchi and mesutchi.
- Can also connect to deka (huge) Tamagotchi in Japanese retail stores and restaurants for an exclusive "friend".

-If this is the "newest" version, why are there several other versions after it on the list?

-According to the next 2 sections on the list, "Tamagotchi plus" was never released in the US; the one in the US is called "Tamagotchi Connection". Which means the US release date should be under that section, not this one.

-If the characters are "new", then obviously they've never been seen before. That line reads like advertising.

-The sections on osutchi and mesutchi don't say anything about an infrared connection, so how is this similar?

I also have another question; looking at your changes to the Digimon section... if Digimon isn't Tamagotchi, what is it doing here in the first place? It should be a link under the "see also" section, not its own section on this page. Tamagotchi is a brand name; anything on this list that's a different brand needs to be taken off or at least moved to a separate section for knock-offs.

Almost every section needs cleanup (or deletion, in the case of Digimon and I don't know how many others). The whole article needs to be read by someone totally ignorant of these things (like me, except I don't really care enough about this topic to keep posting all the problems here one by one) and fixed by someone who knows what they're talking about. Reasons for deleting Digimon section

1) If you're going to have a Digimon section, you might as well make a whole other section of Tamagotchi spin-offs and such, and the article will become not only too big for its own good, but so off-topic that we'll have to start all over again.

2) There was a Digimon section in the past, but it looked like butt and did not fit anywhere, so it got deleted too. If you have any comments, questions, concerns, etc. feel free to ask =) SuperDT 05:42, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Please tell me what Tamagotchis you believe are notable releases, and why. The reason why is so that we can just put the important Tamagotchi releases on this article, and make a list of all Tamagotchi releases on a seperate article. Tamagotchi Connection Version 4

I added the section on V4 quickly a little while ago when I read about the information in an article which was linked from some cheesy fansite. However, now I've found that the link to the article is gone and the article has been completely reworded to leave out references to "Version 4" and just says "next Tamagotchi in January 2007". Hiragana v. Katakana

I recently changed the Tamagotchi hiragana to katakana, and shortly after it was again in hiragana. I was wondering why this was since tamagotchi isn't a native japanese word. Therefore, shouldn't it be written タマゴッチ as opposed to　たまごっち? Holylampposts 06:00, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Because Tamagotchi is a native Japanese word... ok, maybe a play on Japanese words, but still a Japanese word nonetheless. Also, on the Japanese packaging, the name is in English and Hiragana. SuperDT 03:13, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Kakeibo

Shouldn't the Tamagotchi Kakeibo be listed somewhere?

It's the first tam to have a touch screen and acts like a home Deka for an Entama.

I should mention that despite the changes somebody made, this person is right, the kakeibo is the first Tamagotchi to have an actual touch screen. Although in AMERICA and perhaps other non-Japanese places the Tamagotchi Angel and Tamagotchi Ocean were marketed as having a "touch screen" they DO NOT in fact have one! It is merely a motion sensor that works if you shake it, tap it, whatever. The kakeibo is the first and only to have an actual digitizer over the LCD that allows you to interact in various ways depending on where you touch the screen. ALSO, the kakeibo is not the "home dekatama" for the entama/uratama/hanerutchi2 generation. There is a new home dekatama coming out in October. It is yellow-orange and looks just like the first dekatama, except with new functions and that weird ball-antenna thing like the entama has.

Why does the word GigaPets redirect here? Yes, they were virtual pets, but they weren't Tamagotchis, for they were released by Tiger Electronics.

Also if you get a royal costume and wear it it gives you a password and when you get it it says: PASSWORD FOR ?? Lol no you don't reset the Tama, you press the buttons to change the time, but instead keep the time the same, but change the date.
