Disbelief[edit]

What's wrong with it?

shouldn't it just redirect to "Swag"?

Common mispellings are chochkies, chotckies

was origin for the restaurant "Chotchkie's" in "Office Space"

is it Tchotchke or Tshotchke???

Its originally Russian isnt it? so different alphabets and such.

Mainstream usage[edit]

This word has begun appearing in mainstream sit-com programming. It should not be confused with the Australian "swag". The importance of a conference delegate is often recognised by the quality of the give-away products offered. Other types of products now include: - Hot air balloon flights - Wine and wine coolers - USB/thumb drives storage - battery operated torches

Does tchotchke include prizes, such as LCD TVs and laptops?

This is really short -- is this even a good item for wikipedia (as opposed to wiktionary)? Scix 01:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unprofessional article. 'it is a naughty word, my mommy told me never ever ever to use it', do 8 year olds write up wiki? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.219.73.57 (talk) 22:46, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it's very good it's here - that's why I was able to find the meaning of this word as it was used in some tv show. By the way "cacka" is the plural form of "cacko" which doesn't really equals to "toys" in Polish. "Cacko" is more close to "trinket" or "knick-knack" and is sometimes used just for anything that is nice/pleasing/better-than-average.

I also think this deserves an individual article. I had believed the word was of African origin, as my first exposure to it was in a South African comic. The Slavic origin was new to me. Pompomtom (talk) 12:03, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I first encountered this word from an American friend: it was completely new to me, though I recognised it as probably Yiddish/East European in origin. She definitely used it to mean 'trinkets, knick-knacks, kitschy ornaments', so the 'conference freebies' use mentioned here is new to me, although it is clearly a related definition. Like the last contributor, I support the retention of this article. Particularly for users who speak Englishes other than American, it is useful. The question of different spellings and transliterations is a problem, but if the word eventually becomes more widely used outside the USA (and Yiddish/American terms do often catch on more widely) a standard spelling — and perhaps more standard definitions — will probably emerge in time. This is a very useful article. I'm from the UK, and consider myself extremely literate (including some Jewish/Yiddish terms due to having a Hasidic friend), but I had never heard this word until a friend of mine from Chicago used it in an email today. 86.138.137.6 (talk) 03:20, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also not clear on why this is a separate entry rather than a redirect (or given that it's poorly defined, there should probably be a disambiguation page to prostitute, promotional item, souvenir). Presumably there is already a wiktionary page for it. As mentioned, it is in the Slovak dictionary (with a definition similar to "cheap decorative items") but it would be a mark of uneducated speech. 88.212.36.193 (talk) 06:17, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update a more generally appropriate example image[edit]

As much as the general aesthetics and color of the image are good, there appears to be a rubber/ foam female breast in the bottom left corner.

Perhaps a more socially neutral image might be a better choice? Paulszym (talk) 01:45, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I cropped the very bottom off the image to mask the rubber/ foam breast so it was less obvious. Paulszym (talk) 00:35, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Really? We're going to crop out a rubber ball which resembles a cartoon breast? That no-one else has commented about? This seems a bit puritanical and contradictory to WP:NOTCENSORED. I'm not going to revert, but I'm certainly surprised by this. Pburka (talk) 00:56, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
