Bold and distinctive

"Whilst previously television presentation was largely transparent to viewers, the launch of Channel 4 almost made it a talking point."

Don't see that at all. It's true that the Channel 4 logo was bold and distinctive (and incidentally there were three or four different versions), but so were the logos for Thames Television, ATV and London Weekend Television, which can still raise nostalgic goose pimples.
In the 1960s and 1970s while I was growing up, ITV companies routinely used live on-screen announcers at the head of each programme. They literally gave the stations a human face - I often wondered what they did between announcements: did they just sit there and watch the shows or go off and read the paper or something? - and I bitterly mourned their passing.
At least most British channels still use announcements at the start of programmes, unlike the US where stations just jump from a commercial to a programme and often have no personality at all.
As for the way channels squash closing credits nowadays, don't get me started...

That's true - IVC is relatively out of my lifespan, so I've omitted it in the hope someone else can fill the gaps. I'd rather not be adding things just because I've read about them on TV Ark (or similiar). I originally intended to make slightly more extensive reference to DOGs and ECPs and their negative impact but I couldn't quite get it in a way that flowed well. I don't want to turn this article into a mere glossary either. Barneyboo 01:53, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)
