Tech Stuff

Any technical information about the program, platforms it can run on, ports it uses etc?

Try examining the Gaim plugin's source code for that information. Ashibaka tock 01:18, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
UDP protocol: typical port 8000, the first byte is 02 and last byte is 03
TCP protocol: typical port 80, the second byte is 02 and last byte is 03
Though the fact that it uses arbitrary ports for file transfer and other functionality makes it really hard to do traffic characterization. I hope someone can give me more information for identifying QQ file transfer.

Disambiguation

Deleted all the QQ emoticon and World of Warcraft stuff. Disambiguation pages are solely intended to allow users to choose among several Wikipedia articles, usually when a user searches for an ambiguous term. It is NOT the proper place to define the various terms, those belong on their own pages. The QQ emoticon info also lacked any sources and was total original research. Sabar 07:29, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Note to Sabar -

I am not sure I approve of people deleting stuff without making an attempt to replicate the information (unless incorrect) in the correct place. It seems to defeat the purpose of an information storage point.

south african version

is the south african qq managed by the chinese qq? or is it subcontracted to a south african company? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.139.244.236 (talk) 23:55, 28 December 2006 (UTC).

No, the South African page IS NOT an official page, it is NOT subcontracted and it has NO connection with Tencent.

AIM and QQ

The newest version of Aol Instant Messenger has a option to install a plugin called "QQ Games" the plugin has the same QQ penguin logog as tencent QQ...did the two companies cooperate?should we include this in the wiki? DivineBaboon (talk) 07:02, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

English registration?

Since there is an English version of the program, why isn't there a registration page for it? There's no way I can type Chinese characters for that security check thing.--195.229.242.54 05:17, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Your right. I searched the net, but only the Chinese form was available. Non chinese are locked out!

I've downloaded English QQ client fron [1] and successfully registered my QQ number.

The English version is also avaliable from the official website, and it is Vista Compatible. [2] NeoDeGenero 12:14, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

To get a QQ number you have to be able to enter Chinese characters into the verification fields. Easiest to have a chinese person do that for you, or ask a chinese person just to get a number for you. Next easist way is to use a website where you can mouse write the characters and then copy and paste into the verification field. SOme Chinese knowledge will come very handy here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.198.92.221 (talk) 03:08, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

The English signup page is here: http://signup.qq.com It does not require to enter Chinese character anymore. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.198.92.148 (talk) 08:02, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

I never know Tencent did such a fucking rule to get an English QQ number...

http://webqq.qq.com is down. I hope somebody can do some research and look at other options for web access. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.198.92.148 (talk) 08:21, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Tux in logo?

Mention if and why Tux appears in the logo. Linux related? Jidanni (talk) 06:08, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

It's not really Tux. QBro has a scarf. Tux doesn't. In addition QQ doesn't have a Linux client and disconnect any third-party clients (which makes the service unaccessible from Linux). Though it was called OICQ (short for OpenICQ) in very early versions... --Kakurady (talk) 00:05, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Now it has Linux & Mac versions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.18.73.145 (talk) 10:36, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

QQ Mobile outside of China

QUOTE: Currently, the mobile version of QQ is not available to use and download outside Mainland China. Users are only able to use the program through China Mobile or China UniCom networks. Not really, I'm using QQ Mobile fine here in Australia. Have not idea what you're on about, and so I'm removing that section. I am perfectly able to use QQ Mobile on my Nokia N95 without any issues. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email guestbook complaints 10:41, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

English name of the virtual currency

The English language Wikipedia article today refers to Tencent QQ's virtual currency as "QQ coin", but I seem to remember that a few years ago it was "Q coin". I believe the latter is more correct: the direct translation of "Q币" is clearly "Q coin" with a single "Q". The Xinhua news agency as well as Western news agencies seem to have used both "QQ coin" and "Q coin" when talking about the same currency, but the latter gets more Google hits. Scholarly sources that I am aware of use "Q coin" (http://scott.mainzone.com/pubs/08-human-currency-interaction.pdf; http://virtual-economy.org/blog/the_q_coin_secondary_market_in). Most importantly, the only mention of the currency that I could find on Tencent's own English language site, arguably the most authoritative source, is "Q coin" (http://www.tencent.com/en-us/at/contactus.shtml). I have therefore changed mentions of "QQ coin" to "Q coin" in the article. Vlehdonv (talk) 19:00, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Warning

I must put this here(though my English skill is not that good): If a Chinese people wish to contact with people outside of mainland China, they will use E-mail, AIM or MSN(WLM). If you don't live in China and have many Chinese friends, you should not try this IM service. It includes tons of stuffs you don't need, you will find it changes many system settings on your computer, and a few Chinese people are also trying to rid off Tencent QQ. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.18.73.145 (talk) 10:33, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

And the version codes of Tencent QQ are also jokes... --60.18.73.145 (talk) 10:42, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Or you could use the international version found at [3] which seems to be fairly safe so far... --Lucielle (talk) 18:12, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

and you may also choose the Tencent Messenger which is quite clean comparing to the QQ at the same time with the full service you needed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.119.61.251 (talk) 07:26, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Completely Closed Platform

Because QQ only runs on Windows, some hobbiest (Mainly Chinese Mac / Linux) users tried to develope thrid party QQ clients that can be excuted on other operating systems through reverse engineering the original QQ portocol. iQQ, LumaQQ and isQ are some most famous examples. However, since late 2005, Tencent strengthened its network security and blocked all unofficial access to its server. As by now (July, 2006), QQ can only be accessed from its offical released windows client.

This is not true, LumaQQ 2005 and 2006 are able to log on to tencent servers as of august 2006

for other unix alike system, say linux. Eva maybe the best choice. It looks like QQ.not only the appearance, but also the function. besides, Eva includes the authentication part which help you log on the tencent server.

I saw LumaQQ working on a Mac In October 2007. I have QQ running succesfully on Linux Ubuntu using Pidgin as a client (as of November 2007). However, Audio and Video chat will not work on either.

There is an original Tencent client for Linux: http://im.qq.com/qq/linux/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.198.92.231 (talk) 03:16, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Keylogging ??

Anyone else noticed that when you try to install QQ (I had to do it for some people at work), that the Zonealarm Pro firewall software throws up a warning that QQ is trying to log your keystrokes - do you want to allow it yes/no. I bet this is a Chinese Government thing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.17.214.28 (talk) 17:56, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

636.6 million active QQ user accounts

According to the Tencent web site http://www.tencent.com/en-us/at/abouttencent.shtml , as of September 30, 2010, the active QQ users accounts for QQ IM amounted to 636.6 million. This is probably a world record and should be mentioned. Quiname (talk) 21:18, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Some links and info out of date

I will update the most easy to fix errors regarding info links, such as the English version of the software being listed as "Beta", but when I follow the link it lists the software as being version 1.6 with a date of June 2012. However this article does need more serious analysis and editing. MarcoPolo419 (talk) 15:36, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

QQ surveillance

Following the article's citation of the Reporters Without Borders criticism of qq for "track participants by their user number" the following comment was added:

This is in line with all other countries who also monitor and track users online activities using keywords and links as well, so the criticism is very normal, and mostly amounts to an attempt to cause trust of western services, and distrust of chinese services as the competition for users attention increases.

The claim that 'all other countries also monitor and track users online activities' must cite a reliable source; see WP:RS for what counts as a reliable source. This will be difficult, since the claim is applied to all other countries. The claim that the RWB criticism is 'an attempt to cause trust of western services, and distrust of chinese services as the competition for users attention increases' is simply an opinion of the editor. This is known as POV writing, and should be avoided; see WP:NPOV for a description of what this involves. Rgr09 (talk) 08:22, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
