Don't know how you reached that 600,000 figure. According to 2000 census there are only 92,930 Hindus in East Java and the number of Budhists there is even lower. Either the number of Tengerrese is below 100,000 or more than 80% of them are Muslims.

The 2000 census dramatically undercounted religious minorities, and Indonesia's Ministry of Religion has acknowledged this. Data from East Java's Ministry of Religion office (http://jatim.kemenag.go.id/file/dokumen/Keagamaan2009.xls) indicates there are 175,758 Hindus and 210,534 Buddhists, which brings the total from these two religions to 386,292. However, not all of these are Tenggerese, so the 600,000 figure is probably inaccurate. There are a number of other incorrect claims in this article, mainly those relating to religion. Ethnicity Box[edit]

Shouldn't this article have a ethnicity infobox? Since I don't know much about the ethnicity I wouldn't be the person to do so. --PikachuGyeong (talk) 17:59, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Religion of Tenggerese People[edit]

Refer to recent series edits by IP editor, whereas he insist Islam is now majority religion of Tenggerese people based statement in publication by Mujiburrahman. However, according to Putri FK 2022, The Tengger Tribe is spreading across several (36) villages in districts in East Java, with the majority of the population being Hindu and still adhering to Tengger customs.

Furthermore Haliim W. 2016 inform us villages where Tenggerese lives, which are :Ngadas, Jetak, Wonotoro, Ngadirejo, and Ngadisari (Sukapura Sub-district, Probolinggo District); Ledokombo, Pandansari, and Wonokerso (Sumber Sub-district, Probolinggo District); Tosari, Wonokitri, Sedaeng, Ngadiwono, and Podokoyo (Tosari Sub-district, Pasuruan District); Keduwung (Puspo Sub-district, Pasuruan District); Ngadas (Poncokusumo Sub-district, Malang District); and Argosari and Ranu Pani (Senduro Subdistrict, Lumajang District). Then, if we look up 2020 BPS data for those area, we can found that religion with highest number believer in that area is Hindu. For example, this image is 2020 BPS data for religion in Pasuruan district, it is explicitly mentioned that Hindu is majority in Tosari sub-district. Therefore, statement that Islam is majority religion for Tenggerese people is simply incorrect. Ckfasdf (talk) 13:54, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
