"The Big Event" TV Show[edit]

There should be a separate article for "The Big Event" TV program that was on NBC from 1976-81.

THE BIG EVENT Various FIRST TELECAST: September 26, 1976

The Big Event was NBC's regular weekly showcase for special programming. Many of the specials lumped under this generic title were two hours in length, and some were even longer, "The First Fifty Years," a retrospective of NBC's half-century in broadcasting, occupied an entire evening of November 21, 1976. Major theatrical motion pictures were aired as Big Events; Earthquake, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Gone With The Wind made their network television debuts here. In addition several major original television films were produced for the show (Sybil, The Moneychangers, Holocaust, and Jesus of Nazareth -- the latter having previously aired in Europe) as well as more standard specials ("An Evening with Diana Ross," "The Father Knows Best Reunion," "The Story of Princess Grace").

The Big Event concept soon spread to other nights of the week as NBC, which was suffering from a shortage of hit series at the time, sought to boost its ratings with short-run but spectacular programming. A number of two- and three- part series such as "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home" (based on the Thomas Tryon novel "Harvest Home") and "The Godfather Saga" (an amalgam of the two Godfather theatrical films plus unused footage left over from the making of the films), ran partly or entirely under the Big Event title, usually extending from Saturday through Monday or Tuesday nights. A second regular Big Event night was added on Tuesday from 1978 to 1979.

Assessment[edit]

I changed the rating on this article from "B" to "C" because while it seems to have lots of references, the text of the matches is lacking as compared to more recent Wrestlemania events. PK T(alk) 22:26, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in The Big Event[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of The Big Event's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

NOT a PPV[edit]

Recently some not so intelligent people edit pages of WWF events adding them to list of WWF PPVs. This event was also "ppv-ed". "The Big Event" was a simple "house" show that was taped and the video was released later by Coliseum Video. Just watch the beginning and the ending of the tape. It was NOT a PPV.

CNE EX-perience[edit]

The event titled WWF Xperience is not available on the WWE Network because it was not recorded to air as a full televised event. It was not a PPV and certainly not an iPPV as that technology did not exist yet. There were only a couple of cameramen at ringside to record a few moments from the event. If you watch the September 6, 1996 Raw episode on the WWE Network you'll see that they air a quick recap of all the weekend activities at CNE. They also have a graphic on-screen with the spelling "EX-perience", in reference to the event being held at Exhibition Stadium. Therefore I am correcting the spelling in this article.
