"Smugglers" connection?[edit]

Does anyone know whether any reliable source has reported on the possible connection between this story and The Smugglers (1966)? The MacGuffin of The Smugglers is the search for "Avery's gold", Avery being a notorious pirate (possibly the historical Henry Avery); Avery is dead at the time of that story's setting. I know that there's been widespread fan speculation about a possible connection between the Avery mentioned in The Smugglers and the Avery seen in "The Curse of the Black Spot", but obviously we can't include that in this article unless it's reached some RS. I couldn't find any online, but I was wondering whether the possible connection has been mentioned in any print media, such as DWM, SFX or even one of the tabloid newspapers (who, of course, aren't the best sources in general, but might suffice for these purposes). Anyone seen anything? —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:54, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, apparently the latest Doctor Who Magazine (which I won't see for a month) describes this story as "a prequel, of sorts, to The Smugglers". Can someone with access to the magazine verify this and add it, with citation, to the article? Thanks. :) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 15:06, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the reliable source/connection you're looking for:

"TRIVIA: Known as Long Ben or The Arch Pirate, Henry Avary – or Every or Avery – was a true-life sea rogue, making this story a kind of stealth “Celebrity Historical” (he’s also referenced in 1966 William Hartnell tale The Smugglers). The circumstances of his death remain open to conjecture." (SFX magazine review) --HidariMigi (talk) 22:57, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, HidariMigi! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 04:00, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to be able to help, Josiah! Incidentally, if looking for a possible source that refers to the pirate ship as the "Fancy," the Belfast Telegraph's review of the episode does so. --HidariMigi (talk) 15:16, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Captain Avery[edit]

The prequel has confirmed that the Captain Avery in this story is the captain of a pirate ship named Fancy. Is that enough to justify linking his name in the cast list to the historical Henry Avery (or Every), a notorious pirate of the late 17th century who captained a ship named Fancy? Or would that constitute original research at this point? I can see arguments going either way. Of course, if we had a RS making the connection that would settle the matter, but I haven't been able to find one yet... —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 07:02, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the SFX review quoted above is sufficient to justify linking this "Henry Avery" to Henry Avery. By the way, was the ship named as the Fancy in the episode proper, or was that just in the prequel? —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 00:50, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing wrong with the redirect (contrary actually). do not "fix" redirectsXeworlebi (talk) 08:32, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOTBROKEN says not to fix redirects. But Josiah seemed to simply introduce a new link, rather than fixing an existing one, no? ╟─TreasuryTagRegional Counting Officer─╢ 08:44, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, it says links should not be piped to avoid redirects, first time linking or fixing them, same difference. Xeworlebi (talk) 08:53, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It diesn't say that. It says that one should not convert a redirect-link into a piped-link. It does not say that one should not create piped-links in the first place – otherwise what would be the point of piped-links at all? Anyway, I'm not going to carry on this absurdly stupid argument with you, but am happy to open an RfC to gather wider consensus on the issue. ╟─TreasuryTaginternational waters─╢ 09:11, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
More proof that you clearly haven't read WP:NOTBROKEN: "With a few limited exceptions, there are no good reasons to pipe links solely to avoid redirects." If you think that it's a good idea to keep going with this, and start an RfC for the discussion you already started at the Village pump, then you are off-course free to do that. Xeworlebi (talk) 09:57, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Josiah, thanks for finding a source actually connecting Hugh to the historic character! I can now support a link to [[Henry Every|Henry Avery]] ╟─TreasuryTagRegional Counting Officer─╢ 08:44, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it was HidariMigi who found the source: see the section above. I just added the reference to the first use of the name in the article. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 16:48, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know, there was no naming of the ship in the episode proper. U-Mos (talk) 13:05, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, U-Mos. I was wondering because I wanted to make the reference in the Henry Every article more complete, but didn't want to be inaccurate. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 16:48, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References to the Pirates of the Caribbean?[edit]

WP:FORUM does still apply, actually. ╟─TreasuryTagDistrict Collector─╢ 21:57, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was I the only one to notice some semblances to Pirates of the Caribbean? The music was similar, the title is similar to the first Pirates of the Caribbean movies's subtitle: The Curse of the Black Pearl. There are a few other coincident plot elements and themes, but I think this is accidental.--62.252.10.14 (talk) 13:22, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

  • "Before filming the storm sequences began" Reword (I think word may be missing)
  • Wikilink greenscreen
  • BBC America ratings?
    Don't know, couldn't find anything.
  • I question whether refs 11 and 12 are reliable sources. One is a fansite. I'm sure you can find better sources on Bonneville's filmography (such as [1]). Also ensure you have access dates
Removed ref 12. Ref 11 belongs to Big Finish, which is the production company's website that published the audiobooks.

Everything else looks good. I might recommend adding a screenshot, but it's not required for this review. Nice work. I'll place the review on hold for seven days while my comments get looked at. Please respond here when you've finished. Thanks, Ruby2010 comment! 21:08, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done everything (except the image one, I'm not sure if one is even safe to upload without it getting deleted a few days later). -- Matthew RD 21:53, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
