Rename[edit]

I intend to rename this article "The Fylde" instead of "Fylde peninsula". As far as I know everyone refers to it as the Fylde; I've never seen the phrase "Fylde peninsula" anywhere other than on Wikipedia. Even the disambiguation page Fylde states that the area is normally known as The Fylde. I have never heard anyone refer to the area as Fylde peninsula, only ever as The Fylde or the Fylde Coast. I fully agree with your proposal to rename the article. Perhaps with a small section being added about the Fylde Coast (other than the comment about the Fylde Coast being a Local Justice area) too?♦Tangerines BFC ♦·Talk 13:35, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

I am proposing to create [[Category:The Fylde]] and a subcategory [[Category:Fylde (borough)]]. This latter name would break the convention that borough categories do not include the word "borough" in their name, but I think this is necessary in this case to avoid confusion between the two categories. This is currently being discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography#Names of categories for local government districts. Map omission[edit]

Hi Michael, I agree that the map is not ideal. Poulton-le-Fylde should certainly be more prominent than, say, Hardhorn or High Compley. I'm not sure how effective the maintenance tag you left will be. The only way this will be fixed is if someone finds, or creates, a better map that can be used under an appropriate license, and uploads it either here or at Wikimedia Commons. It looks like the map being used now was created in 2008 at OpenStreetMap. I must admit, I'm not 100% sure how copyright & licensing works for maps, but maybe someone could make a better one from OpenStreetMap. When you click on the link in the image page to OpenStreetMap, Poulton-le-Fylde is now on their map. (A purely technical note that doesn't matter, but I know you are interested in learning the ways of Wikipedia: the note you left on the article page is what we'd refer to as a maintenance tag; whereas hatnote would refer to the note at the very top in italics that says "Not to be confused with Fylde (borough)." Morning Dr Greg, you've sent me a message about taking external links off The Fylde - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fylde. I'd just like to explain if I may. Visit Fylde Coast (www.visitFyldeCoast.info) is an umbrella site for a suite of linked local websites about the area. Individually they provide the most comprehensive and up to date online resource of information available to date about each place named in the Geography section of the article. Including extensive descriptions with photos, video and maps of the seafronts, local parks, history, local weather, information from local community groups and much much more. It's not a 'newspaper' resource. Between them and Wikipedia a reader would have a full encyclopedia of this coastline to explore. For example, the regular spectacle of sea foam here https://www.visitfyldecoast.info/environment/weather-and-tides/sea-foam. A section-by-section description of each bit of each seafront in each place - the Blackpool coastline is here in 20 different pages https://www.liveblackpool.info/about/seafront/. I might add that none of the 'official' tourism websites include such a large amount of information about the coastline which they represent, more or less sticking to 'we've got beach'! I've been compiling this body of work for the last 8 years and there's still a lot more to do, so I would respectfully ask you to reconsider. Many thanks in anticipation.
