The "key"...[edit]

...is presumably that this "circle of friends" were all involved in some type of homosexual relationships or other activity? It's not stated here, but it seems to gel both with the Roman A Clef format, and what I can glean of their individual histories. And of course the listed "obscene" interactions have their own particular male counterparts, though I'm not sure quite what would parallel "upskirting"... ;)

(The obfuscation being rather necessary at a time when such things were decidedly illegal, and their direct relevation would be catastrophically ruinous to anyone alluded to in the book... far more so than it may potentially still be these days) 193.63.174.254 (talk) 16:49, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"The indiscretions alluded to..."[edit]

The current page has a sentence which says "The indiscretions alluded to in the novel, including mutual fingering, cunnilingus, and "upskirting", created an uproar among Berners's intimates and acquaintances, making the whole affair highly discussed in the 1930s.". Here's the problem: I've read the entirety of the 2000 edition and none of those three things are in there. The girls are implied to have some intimate or sexual contact, but the only acts described are, like, clasping each other and sleeping in the same bed.

Thing is, I don't have the 1935 edition so I don't know if it was censored or something. I consider that possibility unlikely, however, because who would bother in the year 2000? such things are not nearly as scandalous now.

The next citation in the article, "Cecil Beaton attempted to have all the copies destroyed.[5]" is really only support for that particular Cecil Beaton sentence, and the general existence of the book, as can be seen on Google books: https://books.google.com/books/about/History_of_Homosexuality_in_Europe_Berli.html?id=PW1GjP0_6Y4C&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&gboemv=1&gbmsitb=1#v=onepage&q=Berners&f=false

Since it's completely without citation, and seems unlikely to be true, I'm just removing these specific claimed acts. However, I wanted to leave a record on this talk page in case someone can investigate the mystery further someday using the original edition.
