"Auditions"[edit]

I gained the impression from the play that Britten was auditioning the boy/s who sang to perform in "Death in Venice", but in the opera as performed, Tadzio is a non-singing dancer. Did Britten originally intend for Tadzio to sing, is it just a conjecture of Bennett's that he might have, or is it a complete confabulation in order to put some more of Britten's music into the play?
