Location?[edit]

The novel is set in Argentina, with some characters from Paraguay and England, but has no link that I can recall with Mexico.

Open ending[edit]

At the end, we are left with continuing ambiguities. There is doubt whether Plarr was shot by the kidnappers or the soldiers. Fortnum and Clara speak as if they will make a go of their marriage, but from what we know of both we cannot be sure.

I agree about this open ending. Plarr is shot in the back of his leg with a shot coming from behind him (it was actually formulated like this, rather unsubtlely), when he leaves the hut in which he had been held by the kidnappers. After this Platt senses the presence of Leon, one of the kidnappers, who seems to be gathering courage to give Plarr a coup de grâce. Then, three para's with machine guns are approaching, one of which turns towards Plarr. No mention of Leon, suggesting that Plarr was hallucinating. The last sentence of this scene says that Plarr holds his breath. Besides, some of the kidnappers were killed, not captured. 94.209.70.111 (talk) 16:50, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
