Protagonist’s gender[edit]

It’s so smoothly done that I didn’t notice at all on the first reading, but as he did for the protagonist Chris in Lock-in, Scalzi has entirely avoided giving Jamie a gender. I think we should both note this fact, and also edit the plot summary accordingly - but I haven’t managed to figure out how to do that edit without sounding incredibly awkward. There is some discussion of it on goodreads here: https://www.goodreads.com/questions/2292137-did-scalzi-leave-the-protagonist-s-gender

As at this moment, there is a comment there stating Jamie gets a gendered pronoun towards the end somewhere, but that it may be a mistake. The exact example isn’t cited yet though. Mark Whybird (talk) 13:03, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nicely edited @BPK2, thanks. Mark Whybird (talk) 04:17, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scalzi talks about this on his blog here, Ctrl-F for the words "Can you talk about the thing you did with your protagonist?" --Mark Whybird (talk) 06:23, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
