The Rev is Religious[edit]

In this Avenged Sevenfold article, it states that Synyster Gates says that The Rev is cool and the God of drums Someone should look into this more so that we can get info for this guy's article. --CanesOL79 15:32, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa! He is religious? I thought none of them were. I will try and look into it more but I highly doubt I will find much about him. He is so mysterious. Most unknown member in the whole band...TearAwayTheFunerealDress 16:22, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Remember, religious could mean Christian, Satanist, Pagan, or whatever. All I know is that someone claimed that Synyster Gates said that The Rev is religous maybe.email the band or contact their myspace or something. --CanesOL79 21:37, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok will do. If he is considered to be religious (as in Christianity), I will be veru surprised considering he was kicked out of Catholic School at 2nd grade. I would very much resent any teaching of Christianity afterwards, but that is just me. TearAwayTheFunerealDress 16:26, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Rev is agnostic. He is not religious, personally, but he has a lot of interest in learning about religions. 66.214.118.69 04:08, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think there is some religion in all of A7X! they might be drunk alot and there are three hobbbys: smoking cigarettes, going to bars or clubs, and getting tatooed. besides you ever heard of the term you can't judge a book by its cover, well you cant judge a musician by its music or what it listens to! 12;05-12:15 on January 1 2008

M Shadows said once that he was sad that the rev diedGrungedude22 (talk) 19:36, 6 May 2008 (UTC) what religious because he has tatoos of Jesus on the back of his right forarm and what appears to be the Virgin Mary on the inside of the same armSeb1192 (talk) 17:05, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He's agnostic. During the acceptance speach for Best New Artist at the 2006 VMAs, he says "I'd like to thank God. Whichever one I believe in, which I don't know yet." Xanthic-Ztk (talk) 01:08, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you really know such as being true life friends not FANS of A7X you can't possibly know just what they are really unless they say it. Yes they have said that there is a afterlife and yeah zacky has tats of Jesus and Virgin Mary so having the virgin mary he as well as the others is probably catholic and if they have a holy bible in their homes as shadows looked up sevenfold, no random person just owns one. They also said in the note about praying for his family during the time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.194.26.115 (talk) 22:23, 5 January 2010 (UTC) Jimmy was raised in a Catholic family. Sources, please[edit]

Hiya everyone :) Please source this material reliably and verifiably (see WP:CITE). That means no MySpace. Social pages, blogs, etc are not reliable sources. That means that, as acceptable sources go, this article has just one. I know this guy's got to have a lot of fans since this article's survived so long--won't someone rescue the Rev before someone nominates him for deletion? Wysdom 17:22, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaned up again[edit]

Please read and love and live WP:BLP and WP:CITE. Myspace=NOT A RELIABLE SOURCE. And the one that was used for the reference for his alleged engagement/marriage--I went there just on the off chance that there was posted somewhere a quote, snippet, whatever from a "real" source (so I wouldn't have to just be mean and delete the info?) but c'mon, people! Private page???

Biographies of living people are taken seriously here--you can't just say whatever you want. Learn what reliable sources are and cite them when you're adding info. If you don't have a reliable source (by Wikipedia's definition) to back it, don't add it. Thanks! Wysdom 10:29, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Christ, don't get me started on these articles! It's a full time job keeping them clean. If you say anything even slightly iffy, remove it hard and fast. Better to have no information than incorrect information! Hawker Typhoon 00:59, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Birthday[edit]

The Rev's birthday is February 9th, 1981. There is finally something in print to confirm this - Shadows had the crowd sing happy birthday to him on February 9th at their Spokane, Washington gig per an article by Sarah Linker writing in the Daily Evergreen: "Later, the band announced that it was The Rev’s (the drummer’s) birthday. The crowd was invited to sing along to the “Happy Birthday” tune before A7X proceeded to play the next song." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tinkbat (talkcontribs) 20:08, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is no information regarding the cause of death for Sullivan and no links to the claim that he perished as a result of trama from falling. ...Are you kidding me? "Natural causes" can refer to anything from a stroke to a heart condition to cancer. Are you telling me you've never known, or at least heard of, someone at the age of 28 or younger who died of cancer? If you haven't, I suggest you visit a children's hospital. 137.186.145.70 (talk) 01:51, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The phrase is meaningless and useless. Actually they just mean to say the death does not look like a murder or suicide. The phrase should not be used.Ykral (talk) 09:36, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since police officials used the term, it should most assuredly be used until the true cause of death is known. It comes from an official source, and therefore falls within Wikipedia's standards. Given that The Rev was well known for his own special brand of debauchery, I doubt it will remain the official cause of death, but until the autopsy results come back, it's the best we've got. Leave it be. 137.186.145.70 (talk) 01:51, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If it wasnt natural causes, drugs for example that would be an intoxication death.. sounds alot different from natural causes... although nobody knows right now so until its officially announced, just leave it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.12.71.11 (talk) 11:37, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: Welcome and thanks for contributing. We can't take the entire statement off of that website without running into copyright issues; giving credit to the source just avoids the appearance of plagarism, it doesn't help with the implied copyright and I couldn't find anything on the site that gave permission to copy freely. Celestra (talk) 22:16, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with not including the quote, but not with the copyright reasoning. We include quotes in articles all the time. As long as they aren't extensive, and they bear the quotation marks and attribution, it should be fine. That said though, I don't think the quote really adds anything to the article. Every death of a notable person comes with condolences by people who knew them, and I don't see that this particular one adds any information or clarity to the article. I think the part about a drummer called Steven DuBois should be removed. Musical Collaborations?[edit]

I think we need to update The Rev's associating acts thing. He played drums on Brian Haner's previous album 'Cougar Bait' and he played drums on one track [Bring my Baby Back] from 'Fist Fight at the Waffle House'. He recorded it before he had passed away. I don't have permission to add this in on Jimmy's page.

Brian posted the following on his facebook page. "Brian HanerGetting lots of messages and e-mails so I will clarify once again. The Rev played on ALL songs on my last CD, "Cougar Bait", but only one song on the new CD, "Fistfight at the Wafflehouse."18 hours ago

"Brian Haner I should clarify because I always forget how psychotic Avenged fans are about details. The Rev played drums on only one song on my new CD, "Bring My Baby Back". To the best of my knowledge, it was the last thing he recorded in the studio ON DRUMS. It was recorded shortly before the Nightmare CD."

Save Me Correction "Fiction" was the last song Jimmy worked on. They said that he came to them with it practically finished and he said something about that this would be the last song on the album and then I believe within a week of him saying that to the band is when he died. So how could he have worked on "Save Me" if "Fiction" was the last song he wrote. Here is the quote. "The eeriest thing about it is there is a song on the album called "Fiction" (a nickname The Rev gave himself) which started out with the title "Death". And the song was the last song The Rev wrote for the album, and when he handed it in, he said, that’s it, that’s the last song for this record. And then 3 days later, he died." Edit request from KellanS, 3 January 2011[edit]

{{edit semi-protected}} In the article, it says Jimmy played the piano on "Warmness on the Soul". According to the CD jackets, Synyster played piano on both "Warmness on the Soul", and "Sidewinder". However, The Rev did play the piano for "Seize the Day". So, please substitute "Seize the Day" for "Warmness on the Soul".

Additionally, according the CD jackets, The Rev's vocals were used on "Strength Of The World" and "The Art Of Subconscious Illusion" so the section that says "His vocals are featured in Avenged Sevenfold's "A Little Piece of Heaven", "Brompton Cocktail", "Critical Acclaim", "Crossroads", "Gunslinger", "Lost", "Scream", "Afterlife", and "Fiction"." should instead read "His vocals are featured in Avenged Sevenfold's "The Art Of Subconscious Illusion", "Strength Of The World", "A Little Piece of Heaven", "Brompton Cocktail", "Critical Acclaim", "Crossroads", "Gunslinger", "Lost", "Scream", "Afterlife", and "Fiction"." The article is also a stub, and being as the band/side project is pretty much dead since The Rev died, it is of little importance. Boomer VialHolla 16:10, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

External links modified[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on The Rev. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

Assessment comment[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:The Rev/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

I have no knowledge of this person or his associated band. I came here looking for information, and what I have found is a poorly written missive filled with slang and rumor. Example: "her fave authors"? I realize that wikipedia is design for the community to share information but is it too much to ask that articles at least be grammatically correct and not use slang?

Quotes[edit]

This section should be removed. First off, it's useless. Second, none of it is sourced. Third, I know for a fact the first quote on there was not a quote of his own, rather it was him paraphrasing someone else. I'm deleting this section unless someone has any valid points as to why it should stay. Zdawg1029 (talk) 17:01, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 23 April 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. This is a fairly unexceptional conflict between pageviews and long-term significance. Participants are evenly divided and both sides have some backing in policy, so no consensus (defaulting to the status quo) is the appropriate closure. The RevJames Sullivan (musician, born 1981) – This musician is not the primary topic for the article title The Rev User:力 (powera, π, ν) 00:14, 23 April 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. 晚安 (トークページ) 15:44, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ And what is? Not saying the argument is wrong but we need to at least understand what the primary topic is proposed to be, or it will just become a redirect? -- ferret (talk) 00:26, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The hatnote text is For the style used when addressing clergy, see the Reverend which is where this should be targeted. (without a hatnote on that page? If it needs a hatnote, maybe there's a DAB that can be the target) User:力 (powera, π, ν) 00:32, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"The Rev" is by far Sullivan's commonly known name as a professional. How will readers find him by that expected alias following this move? From a hatnote alone? -- ferret (talk) 00:41, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. 87.254.76.249 (talk) 22:59, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: "The Rev" is his common name --FMSky (talk) 01:04, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. There is no other article that would reasonably be titled "The Rev", so there is no title conflict. Not to mention The Rev gets almost twice the pageviews of The Reverend anyway. Station1 (talk) 04:27, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Common name of the subject. Hatnote suffices. No other specific subject by this name. -- ferret (talk) 13:52, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • support the title has more long term significance—blindlynx 01:13, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The title is not commonly, and certainly not in any official capacity, used in this shortened form. -- ferret (talk) 01:42, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support The Rev (musician, born 1981). The Rev should redirect to The Reverend, of which it is a common abbreviation, far, far better known than this person. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:27, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support use of The Rev in reference to Reverends predates this musician, per ngrams. BilledMammal (talk) 13:52, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Predating is not a strong argument for PTOPIC. Windows very much predates Microsoft's usage, but we recognize the modern expectation of readers to find the Microsoft topic. -- ferret (talk) 15:16, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It counters your argument The title is not commonly, and certainly not in any official capacity, used in this shortened form. It also tells us that the primary topic by long term significance is The Reverend, and the consistency of use in recent years tells us that most uses of the term continued to refer to The Reverend, not to this musician. BilledMammal (talk) 16:20, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not convinced the ngram link is an accurate picture. Searching on The Rev may be including partial matches. By contrast, search on "The Rev" with quotations brings an interesting detail to view, that after the 2000s when the artist was relevant, modern use of the term spiked. -- ferret (talk) 18:08, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It started increasing in 1995, before this musician became active, and the move request discusses the title The Rev, not "The Rev" - comparing the two shows that there is minimal use of the latter compared to the former. BilledMammal (talk) 03:48, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that search engines, without the quotations, you are partial matching. The search isn't for "The Rev", with quotations. The quotations make the search be for an exact match, they aren't included in the results itself. Otherwise, you're catching the use of "The Rev." as an abbreviation. And if that's your intent, that's fine, but the argument is that "The Rev" by itself is a title in use. -- ferret (talk) 14:00, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ngrams doesn't work like that; when you search for "The Rev", you are searching for it with quotations. BilledMammal (talk) 00:35, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Let's take a look at outgoing links though. The hatnote to "Reverend" is not even in the top 20 links that readers click to off this article. So we're not seeing lots of readers end up here expecting to read about the title and click through. -- ferret (talk) 15:40, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, essentially per Station1. I find it unrealistic that most people arrive on this page searching for The Reverend, given that "the rev" on Google primarily gives me results for this guy, so the hatnote seems fine. (And if this is moved, it doesn't need "born 1981" in the title, unless there's a conflicting musician named The Rev I missed...) Nohomersryan (talk) 22:01, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

His Resting Place[edit]

James is laid to rest at the Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach, California. I know we can't cite findagrave.com so I linked a Youtube video, but that was removed. There seems to be quite a few pictures of his tombstone online, so I was wondering if that can be added. Cahlin29 (talk) 20:41, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
