Sources for discography[edit]

Why don't all items in the discography need a source? If this is "a list of published works, akin to a bibliography", then to complete the citation we'd need to add a Catalogue number as well as the record label names? Isn't it easier to just add a source - there are probably a few to choose from. How come some need a source and others don't? Thanks. 86.187.163.190 (talk) 17:25, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The cited sources in the discography are meant to source the chart positions. It's superfluous to put in a footnote for a published work that would just duplicate the line entry, and catalog numbers often get deleted as trivial information (perhaps we should treat them more like ISBNs, but there's no established consensus to do so at this point). A citation would be needed for additional information not part of the published release - for instance, day-and-date release data, chart positions, or sales certifications. "The cited sources in the discography are meant to source the chart positions" - where is that written down as a policy? Also I am struggling to find the chart position of #41 for the Down to Earth album in that AllMusic source. And I don't have a copy of Roberts (2006) and there's no online preview via GoogleBooks for me. Why is a source not also useful to simply support e.g. title, artist, year and label? Thanks. 86.187.228.53 (talk) 10:23, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
