Birth date?[edit]

Is there a cite as to his birth date? I've heard it as June 7th, not June 11th, but have no cite other than reading it in an article years ago so I won't change it at this point. 12.75.52.101 04:46, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got this birthday off of some website's calender where they had birthdays of wrestlers on it. If you can find a better source, I'm more than open. Most places only have his birth year on it so I went with whatever I could find.--Darren Jowalsen 22:45, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sabu[edit]

Are they really related (as this article implies), or is that just kayfabe? JPG-GR 00:56, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dave Meltzer always refers to them as uncle and nephew and Ed had many brothers and sisters, so I would say that they are indeed uncle and nephew.--Darren Jowalsen 02:14, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There does seem to be a bit of a family resemblance between them and Farhat was notoriously known for staying in character and anything to do with his character, even while out and about away from wrestling. If they weren't related, it would've come out long ago because there are no secrets left in professional wrestling anymore.Odin's Beard 23:43, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ALSO the sheik was also wrestling for juggalo champoinshit wrestling for awhile my source the jcw vol dvd

Under a bus?[edit]

"He was set to face NWA World Heavyweight Champion Lou Thesz in Chicago for his title but Thesz had a reputation for exposing and embarrassing "gimmick" wrestlers so Farhat bailed from the ring and hid under a bus."

Is this spam? If this is how the event was really played out the article seems to be "playing along" just a bit too much. 69.3.87.160 01:22, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Farhat was worried that Thesz was going to legimately hurt him or completely kill his gimmick (as he had done to other people) so he decided at the last second to abort the match and to make a run for it. Sheik did it to keep his mystique, Thesz ended up looking good anyway so he didn't get too worked up about it. Dave Meltzer writes about the incident in Tributes II.--Darren Jowalsen 05:30, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot (talk) 18:53, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stepson being murdered[edit]

Why is there nothing about his step son being murdered? Isn't that news worthy? Or is his personal life not news worthy. Or maybe nobody knows, considering my aunt was in his step sons will and got a lot of money.. But anyway, yeah, I was just wondering if anybody knew anything about his step son getting murdered. I think his name was Paul. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.244.30.198 (talk) 17:54, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fireballs[edit]

I find it very hard to believe that he threw fireballs at people when they recognized him in public. I don't think he was that stupid. Even though it was flash paper ignited by a hidden lighter, he still could have hurt somebody, especially if it was a child. There would be nothing to prevent people from taking out after him, and there would be nothing to prevent them from suing the Sheik. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.118.232.189 (talk) 23:13, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ed FarhatThe Sheik or The Original Sheik – By far, this is his best known name. --Relisted. Red Slash 02:53, 13 September 2013 (UTC) --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 22:16, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Strong oppose "The Sheik" at best it would be The Original Sheik , the Rudolph Valentino film should be the primary topic of "The Sheik" and The Sheik (wrestler) should redirect to the disambiguation page, since the Iron Sheik is also called "The Sheik". -- 70.24.244.158 (talk) 06:09, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. His real name is used by news articles and books. --George Ho (talk) 18:14, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

College football[edit]

The banner for WikiProject College football was removed several months ago, based on the assumption that the article contains no mention of college football. The article did previously state that he played for the University of Michigan team with no mention of any specifics. The Bentley Historical Library maintains a search engine for UM football rosters, which returns no hits for Farhat. OTOH, his WWE biography does claim that he played there, but it reads like it was drawn rather heavily from this article. I'll lean towards the former as being more credible and not re-add any mention of it. Speaking of "credible sources", my search also turned up a New York Times obituary which doesn't appear to have been reflected here in the least. Ed FarhatThe Original Sheik – I made a discussion 6 years ago (I didn't remember), but just 2 people appeared. Again, it's his ringname and his common name. After The Iron Sheik, I think he is best known as The Original Sheik (better than The Sheik). --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 14:51, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose – "Original Sheik" or variations thereof are recentist inventions of fanboys who lack a sufficient enough clue to understand that Farhat was a whole lot bigger deal than Khosrow Vaziri, regardless of what the WWE hype machine may lead them to believe. During his career, he was known as "The Sheik" or "The Sheik of Araby". RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 21:30, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Makes no sense to move the article to a name the subject never used. Definitely not the common name. I would support a move to The Sheik (wrestler), or whatever parenthetical qualifier is in vogue these days. GaryColemanFan (talk) 22:14, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, @GaryColemanFan: @RadioKAOS:, do you prefer The Sheik (wrestler)? I proposed The Original Sheik since 6 years ago, The Sheik had strong oppose. Currently, The Sheik (wrestler) redirect to Sheik, but the main topic is Ed Farhat, not Iron Sheik or Sheik II --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 11:57, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer The Sheik (wrestler). It looks like one of the objections to this title was that The Iron Sheik was too similar or a claim (which I don't see any evidence to support) that he had also used the ring name The Sheik. It looks like the other Sheiks could be mentioned in a hatnote: "This article is about Ed Farhat, who competed as The Sheik and is sometimes known as The Original Sheik. For other uses, see The Iron Sheik or Sheik II." GaryColemanFan (talk) 15:25, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Boy, I sure do hate these no-explanation closes. Any comment on the discussion, and how it was leading toward a different move target? No, just a quick count of votes. Was I wasting my time in continuing the discussion beyond the initial oppose? GaryColemanFan (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well, anything new? I have no problem to the article being named The Sheik (wrestler). Also, I recently saw his WWE profile and he is listed as The Sheik, not The Original Sheik. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 08:37, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
