Plot Summary[edit]

Removed the paragraph about the so-called "similarity" to Keith Laumer's 1966 short story "The Body Builders" since it was written prior to the invention of the Internet and several decades before the phenomenon popularly known as Internet addiction, the primary theme of 'Surrogates'.

A-hem[edit]

'Internet addiction' has been covered by plenty of authors. Using remote controlled androids isn't new either. A whole society living through such robotic surrogates (while their real bodies are "pickled" in a form of suspended animation), however, is first found in the short story "The Body Builders"[1] (1966). Perhaps Vendetti simply never read "The Body Builders." Still, the premise is dead-on similar. There are also similarities to Kiln People (2002) by David Brin, with another whole society living using duplicates to do the dangerous work. Drf5n (talk) 19:42, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An even earlier use of the concept can be found in a comic book: Green Lantern #6, May/Jun 1961: "The World of Living Phantoms!" The story involved a planet of people who kept themselves in suspended animation in underground chambers, while living immortal lives through solid holographic duplicates on the planet's surface.
