Requested move[edit]

I request that this be moved to Thomas Clement Cobbold, because the person has this middle name and using it will distinguish him from the Thomas Cobbold who is linked from Cliff Brewery. Any objections? PamD (talk) 23:20, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest we use Thomas Cobbold (brewer) and Thomas Cobbold (diplomat) to disambiguate the two. I don't think middle names are used to disambiguate people on Wikipedia. Tryde (talk) 11:08, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that would be helpful. I find you're right about not using middle names to disambiguate; "Adding middle names, or their abbreviations, merely for disambiguation purposes (that is: if this format of the name is not the commonly used one to refer to this person) is not advised." is the wording in WP:NCP. Sorry to have got it wrong - WP editing is a long and fascinating learning experience! I'd be happy to go with that - we'll need to MOVE the existing TC page, and set up a dab to split the pair of them, and then look at all the "WHat links here" to make sure they are only those two! Let's wait for any input from User:Jcuk as s/he's doing such a lot of work on Ipswich MPs. PamD (talk) 16:35, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thomas Cobbold (brewer) and Thomas Cobbold (diplomat) seem fair enough to me, if there's a convention against using middle names. Personally I think middle names might be more logical, but hey! thats Wiki for you! ;-) I suppose if you were looking for Thomas the diplomat and didnt know he was called TC Cobbold... Anyhow, Thomas (brewer) and Thomas (diplomat) are fine by me. Cheers! John ( Jcuk (talk) 14:51, 28 November 2007 (UTC) )[reply]
I think I've now done it all - tidied up every mention of a Thomas Cobbold I could find, and created a dab page which includes a third chap! Have removed the "request move" tag above, and removed it from the list at WP:RM.
I think it's important that whenever any name needs a disambiguator, we create a dab page - that helps to reduce the risk of the same person being linked with several different versions of their name. I hope there isn't a ruling against a dab page where all the entries are redlinks! I note that there's a rule somewhere that every entry in a dab page should have one and only one blue link, so if listing a redlink we need to link to a page which mentions them. Cheers. I am afraid this plan will not work as there was more than one brewer called Thomas Cobbold: Thomas Cobbold (1680–1752) and his son Thomas Cobbold (1708–1767).Leutha (talk) 19:05, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
