Disputed Tag[edit]

We have a nag tag unsupported by discussion here. Its complaints are:

  1. The plot sections are too long.
  2. The language is in-universe.

I disagree with both contentions. In any case, specifics are required rather than vague assertions. I will continue to remove the tag until these are provided as it spoils the appearance of the article as it is too intrusive and hectoring. Improvements to the article are best discussed separately on this talk page, where they will not disturb the reader. Colonel Warden (talk) 07:25, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stop removing the tags. It has too much plot - two sections worth that take up the more than half the article and spans 703 words. That's more plot summary than the individual films as a WHOLE is supposed to have. You don't get to remove tags just because you don't like their "appearance" or think they spoil the article. You don't like them, fix the article so it doesn't need them by editing down the plot per the character article guidelines. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 18:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Your word count includes critical commentary on the moral lessons provided by the character. This content is derived from numerous sources which comment on this and this material is not plot summary but critical analysis. And, if you are going count each individual word, please indicate the basis for your metric. Myself, I prefer the sound policy that Wikipedia is not a bureaucracy and so do not agree that we should proceed in this pettifogging way. Colonel Warden (talk) 01:43, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The basis for the metric is the over all WP:MOSFILM. If the entire film gets less than 400 words, why should an article about a single character get more? Commentary on moral lessons should be in another section, not the plot summary. See any FA character article for the proper way to format it. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 01:48, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The entire film does not get less than 400 words. WP:MOSFILM states Plot summaries should be between 400 and 700 words and should not exceed 900 words unless there is a specific reason, such as a very complicated plot. The article Bambi has 417 words while Bambi II has 1128. When one allows for the inclusion of critical commentary, our article here is comfortably within these guidelines.
  • As for the inclusion of critical commentary upon the specific moral lessons provided by Thumper, this seems convenient. The disputed omnibus tag also complains that the style is too in-universe and so we have contradictory complaints. Since the tag is incoherent, factually incorrect, disputed and does not enhance the reader's experience it should go. Colonel Warden (talk) 07:47, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Obviously you don't participate in the film project, or you know that closer to 400 is prefered, particularly for a film only slightly over an hour long. Bambi II's article being in crappy shape is not an excuse. Again, no, this article is NOT "comfortably within these guidelines" and I'd also have to question the inclusion of "moral lessons" provided by Thumper. And no, it is not "disputed" it is only disliked by you, a single editor who has already admitted he just doesn't like how tags look. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 13:43, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Colonel Warden is not alone in his or her views. So that part of your statement is absolutely and categorically false. As for the rest, it sounds terribly fishy. But I can't be sure it's enought to deserve a WP:TROUT. --Firefly322 (talk) 15:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I looked at the featured article of the film project as suggested above and found Padmé Amidala. This article has ~1157 words of plot summary and so again it seems that our article is not significantly out of line by this measure. Colonel Warden (talk) 15:23, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Star Wars spans WAY more films, and the character appears in other media as well. The films are also longer than Bambi, and that article is much longer than this one but whatever. I fixed the plot issue. Now the tag can stay out. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 15:27, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your précis is perhaps too severe but I am inclined to leave it at that now so that we may move on. This section can be reconsidered as when we review the original movies. Colonel Warden (talk) 17:11, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

I come with this proposal to merge this character into the film's article mainly because it lacks notability. The section about the missils is mainly about Bambi and not Thumper himself, and the name indicates nothing as Thumper is not a name exclusive to this character, a similar case to that of the character of Dumbo and the air-sea rescue mission of the same name. With no actual appearances in popular culture and no coverage by reliable secondary sources, it can be perflectly merged into the film's article. --LoЯd ۞pεth 07:54, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose The topic appears in numerous reliable secondary sources and so its notability is well established. It's not clear what is meant by "no actual appearances in popular culture" but this appears to be false as Thumper is the title hero of numerous works of fiction - see books, for example. Colonel Warden (talk) 09:11, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I withdrew the nomination since the character actually originated in the book as Friend Hare and as Colonel Warden appointed, it appears in other works. --LoЯd ۞pεth 01:16, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life[edit]

Thumper is extremely curious and wise beyond his years. He has four younger sisters. His sisters love playing with him, but he prefers the company of his friend, Bambi. He takes pride in teaching Bambi new things such as walking, talking and eating. He loves to tease and joke around. Thumper is usually very cheerful. The only times Thumper has ever been truly upset is when he thought he was never going to see Bambi again and when his mother yelled at him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sprinkles1621 (talkcontribs) 09:49, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No connection between antimissile programs and the movie or it's characters.[edit]

The Air Power article cited made absolutely no connection between the code name for project MX-795 (Project Thumper) and the movie character. See: http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/apj/apj87/win87/papp.html

Secret project names were picked for their neutrality (not revealing anything).

For example: MX-770 Navajo MX-775A Snark MX-775B Boojum MX-776 Rascal MX-794 Wizard MX-795 Thumper MX-802 Dragonfly MX-1018 Project Tom-Tom

The assertion that the USAF space based antiballistic missile program was named for the movie character Bambi is even more absurd, BAMBI was an acronym for BAllistic Missile Boost Intercept. http://www.cfr.org/missile-defense/chronology-national-missile-defense-programs/p10443

Another Bell/USAF program of the era was BOMI, from BOmber MIssile. http://astronautix.com/craft/bomi.htm

Rabbit vs Hare[edit]

If Thumper's mother is Mrs Hare and father is Mr Hare, is thumper not a hare, as opposed to a rabbit? Watched Bambi on Disney+ and it refers to the parents as "Hare" in the subtitles. Admittedly he doesn't look particularly hare-like. 82.39.12.25 (talk) 23:08, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thumper (Bambi)Thumper (character)
To be WP:CONSISTENT, we had a discussion at WikiProject Disney on what titles should be for Disney character and we came up with a flow chart. Since there is no other article about a character named Thumper, this needs to be changed to (character), unless I am missing something. ― Kaleeb18TalkCaleb 18:56, 29 June 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. CollectiveSolidarity (talk) 23:26, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose That flowchart is in direct contradiction to the Wikipedia guidelines at WP:FILMCHARACTERS. Since Thumper is mainly a Bambi character, the disambiguation would be (Bambi) and not (character). I would suggest discarding it entirely and following the Manual of Style rather than inventing your own rules. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 02:23, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Not consistent with WP:FILMCHARACTERS, nor the provided chart, due to the character being overwhelming associated with the Bambi films than with anything else. -- Netoholic @ 04:17, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It actually does follow the chart in that Thumper does not share a name with another character that has a standalone article; but the chart is incorrect with regards to Wikipedia policy, which states that the film or franchise be used by default as disambiguation, with (character) only being used if the character and film have the same name, such as Bambi (character). ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:04, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
