Helpful and inclusive web page rejected - opinions requested[edit]

I put up a link on Wikipedia's Tillamook page to my web page for it, but it was rejected. It is an alphabetical directory of businesses in Tillamook. When I find that one of the businesses has a web site, I make a link to it for free. People find the network very useful and easy to use. I was told by a Wikipedia editor, however, that my page was inappropriate. In the interest of fairness and community, please have a look: Tillamook's Online Business Directory After all, there is no community without businesses to serve and support it. I was in the process of making a link back to Wikipedia from my Tillamook page, but I will have to wait on that to be sure it's reciprocal.

My web site is not "personal." It is copyrighted (since 2002), my business is registered with the State of Oregon, and I am a chamber of commerce member in my community. In addition to Tillamook, I have pages that serve 15 other communities, which cover the entire Oregon coast. I would love to share my work with the Wikipedia community.

I was told to talk about it here instead of resubmitting, but not how to have the editor reconsider their rejection. I'm new to Wikipedia, so I'd appreciate any constructive feedback about my submission or web page.

Without looking at your site I would say no based on two Wikipedia guidelines you will want to read: WP:COI & WP:WWIN. Aboutmovies 21:33, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

pronunciation[edit]

Is the last vowel ə, ʌ, or ʊ? kwami (talk) 09:50, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My current settings don't support the characters listed above, but see http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary (looks like you'll have to search for "Tillamook"). Note that the sound file given seems to have more of a "muck" sound at the end, while I've always heard it pronounced "mook". Sorry I don't speak IPA, and I speak Pacific Northwest English with influences from the Midwest and South, so that's the best I can do! I can't really "hear" the difference in a lot of vowel sounds, so hopefully someone else can also help. Katr67 (talk) 20:32, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you're from the general area and confirm W's mook, that's enough to go on. (The symbols should now be visible.) kwami (talk) 22:28, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was raised in Tillamook and though I don't know the symbols, the oo is pronounced a lot like the oo in "shook," but quickly and without emphasis, which could make it sound a lot like a quick pronunciation of muck. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.112.21.183 (talk) 03:55, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flooding[edit]

This sentence appears in Tillamook County, Oregon: "Development along U.S. Route 101 to the north of Tillamook during the last part of the 20th century has blocked part of the flood plain of the Wilson River, contributing to repeated winter flooding in the city." It should really be here because it's relevant to Tillamook the city, not so much Tillamook the county. It's uncited (are there any good references?) but as a local, I'm certain it's factual. 4.242.147.140 (talk) 17:18, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The flooding has limited Tillamook's growth, IMO, and several businesses had to leave due to the flooding. 4.242.147.140 (talk) 17:19, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Businesses even today in 2022 are closing shop because of flooding this is still a major issue. Alaskancrabpuffs (talk) 07:49, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

'Notable Residents'[edit]

A reference to a single person who claims to be born in Tillamook on their personal page. Certainly not not notable in any context relating to Tillamook, Oregon. Allow me to bring to your attention page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WWIN#Wikipedia_is_not_an_indiscriminate_collection_of_information 97.121.9.91 (talk) 03:21, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch, I agree -- this sort of section is rarely useful in an article about a city. -Pete (talk) 03:21, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for your postive response 97.121.9.91 (talk) 03:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem -- I like to think that most of us respond positively to people who are clearly making an effort to improve the encyclopedia. Your use of the "edit summary" to explain your intent is unusual in an editor who hasn't yet created an account, and makes your intentions clear; I appreciate it. I now see that Skookum reverted your edit, which I hadn't noticed before; he's a great contributor around here, but sometimes we disagree on stuff like this. Hopefully we can just discuss it here and figure out the best approach, rather than just edit-warring back and forth in the article.
From where I sit, it's conceivably acceptable to have people like this mentioned, but choosing who gets included involves a pretty healthy amount of editorial judgment. I know I'm not qualified to determine who the top, or top 5, or top 20 most notable people from Tillamook are; and in the absence of a well-reasoned argument to that effect, I think it's better to leave out a "notable residents" section than to have an arbitrarily incomplete one. Skookum, your thoughts? -Pete (talk) 04:06, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I see "Notable residents" sections all the time, for the most obscure places and sometimes with "unique contents" (one entry, I mean, not "unique" in the buzzword sense); maybe it's not a convention in US town articles, though; see Trail, British Columbia, Penticton, Mission, British Columbia. Those are all fair-sized/major places of course, I'd have to head-scratch to suggest smaller-place/single-few entries but they are out there. In this case maybe it's an annoyance taht the "only" notable person listed is one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends; in Chemainus BC (or is it Ladysmith they've got bragging rights to Pamela Anderson, of course. Are there any other peple associated with the history of Tillamook who could stand an article, i.e. to flesh out this section? The guy who founded teh cheese industry maybe? (that's a serious question, not tongue-in-cheek). I havent' really looked around any other Oregon town/city articles - I think I looked up Silverton once while creating Silverdale, British Columbia but didn't notice any "notable persons" section - though Silverdale, British Columbia has a couple (and it was Silverdale, Washington I guess i was thinkign of, though there's also Silverton, British Columbia...)_. If it's not a standard item in Oregon articles I see no problem with dropping it, unless there were more people worth having in it, eventually if at all. I'm sure Ms. whatsername wouldn't like to see her name dropped from her hometown's page though (not that that matters); if she was a famous writer or actress or scientist would there be any debate? I don't think it's "trivia", or rather I don't think these sections are what the anti-trivia guideline is for; but when there's only one entry....well, I don't know. but I'd think there must be other notable/historical person in Tillamook history, it's not that small or insignificant a place.....maybe move her here for now, with a note that when other people turn up, the section can be reinstated? or is that hiding the bimbo from teh bathwater? (to coin a phrase, not meaning to be cruel...)Skookum1 (talk) 05:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Personally, though I'm not particularly invested in keeping them, most city articles have "Notable residents" sections. If you think they should be eliminated, it would be good to talk to WikiProject Cities, whose guidelines I use and whose U.S. city template includes such a section. By consensus, we at WikiProject Oregon have agreed that "resident" can mean "born in, once lived in, or currently lives in". Moreover, when we are talking about notability, we mean notability by Wikipedia standards. Thus, like it or not, Hugh Hefner's girlfriend is indeed "notable". Wikipedia is also not censored. I won't revert, but I disagree with the removal of the section. Katr67 (talk) 05:48, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First, there are others that could be added, most if not all of these people are from the city. Second, this is SOP for cities. And along those lines, read the WP:NOT that you linked to anonIP and there is nothing there about a list like this. If you want to go with list of indiscriminate collection, its not that. It is a listing of the notable people (here it was incomplete), just as the rest of the article is a collection of other information about the city. But remember that a city a a built environment, made by people, thus it is people that shape a community and they most certainly should be mentioned in an article about the city. Here, there just needs to be more of them mentioned. Aboutmovies (talk) 06:01, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen these around a bunch, but they always struck me more as fancruft than the result of considered editorial decisions. Looked at it as a WP:OTHERSTUFF issue. But, I guess I don't feel strongly about it one way or the other. -Pete (talk)

Tillamook/Nehalem people[edit]

Just wanted to note, since I'm on this talkpage for a moment, that in the intro the explanation of the Tillamook people is well-phrased, but it would be good to fit in that their name for themselves was Nehalem, the name Tillamook is from the Chinookan language, and what Nehalem descendants there are today are on one of the reservations farther down the coast; not Coos Bay, I'd have to go look it up on one of the tribe/language pages. didn't want to clutter up the intro with too much of such an explanation but if somebody can fit it in without too much verbiage...better than than Skookum1-style verbiage no?Skookum1 (talk) 05:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The descendants are on teh Siletz Reservation.Skookum1 (talk) 05:29, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Millions of Cheese Tourists? -citation needed[edit]

"Millions of people visit the cheese factory (located north of Tillamook on Highway 101) each year." so, that's well over 5000 people (on average) every day of the year who visit the cheese factory? shenanigans. 98.197.160.186 (talk) 18:15, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they had over a million in 2001, and just under that in 2002, the last year I know of for figures. Aboutmovies (talk) 03:21, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
