March 16 edits[edit]

A major edit was done on March by User:Tuccijam. More detail was added. This is good. However, all of the information was without reference. Also, there were no Wikilinks included and existing links were removed, much of it was Point of View, and it violated many of the Wikipedia Policies. I understand the desire to provide more information about Tim Gunn. However this is not a fan site. Introduction Concerns[edit]

"Timothy M. Gunn (born July 29, 1953) is a gay American fashion maven..." Is there anyway Gunn's sexual orientation can be incorporated into this article without making it feel as if his career is predicated on it? The way it's phrased currently feels the same way as if it were "Tim Gunn is a gray haired American fashion maven..." Maven? Of what? (and says you!)[edit]

The word "maven" is non-descript and subjective. What exactly Tim Gunn does should be described more specifically. This problem is similar to that of articles that describe someone as a "mogul." It doesn't tell the reader much about the subject. ask123 20:34, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parson's seems to have hidden Tim Gunn's Bio and listing as faculty member[edit]

I clicked on the link provided at the bottom of the article ( Parsons The New School For Design Official Biography) and the page that came up a Parson's web page, but the bio was completely blank. I then tried to find him listed as a faculty member and there was no listing him. I'm guessing that probably due to his celebrity, they have hidden this information.

Someone should further crop or replace the image of Tim Gunn in the infobox. You can clearly see another individual who is posing with him for the picture. A portrait image should not include the fan who approached him and asked to take a picture with him... It's not very professional looking. Anyway, that kinda stuff is for fansites... Gunn has made occasional references to semiotics and uses its jargon -- e.g. http://www.comicmix.com/news/2010/04/17/tim-gunn-talks-comics-fashion/ -- does anyone know if he has had any training in semiotics? Asexuality[edit]

Under the Personal Life heading, there is a sentence stating that Tim is Asexual. The reference given is an opinion piece which links to the actual statements by Tim Gunn. In those statements he claims to have been celibate for 29 years, but nowhere does he say he is asexual. In fact, this article has several links to Tim saying he is homosexual. Celibacy is not the same thing as asexuality, so I am removing this sentence from the article. Chelos (talk) 20:33, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tim Gunn is not asexual[edit]

I keep seeing this article claiming Tim Gunn is asexual, but the source article never once has him claiming to be such. Instead the article is about him declaring himself CELIBATE as a gay man. Celibacy is very different from asexuality and it is not good to conflate the two.

"If you watch the above video until the end, you'll see Gunn speaking in halting sentences, holding back emotion, as he explains that his decision to remain celibate by choice followed a difficult breakup and is partly "psychological." As you can see, Gunn made a choice to be celibate. Asexuality is NOT a choice, no one chooses to be asexual. Gunn made a clear choice to be celibate because of difficulties of sexual relations as a gay man in the era of his youth.

I try to edit this information because it is very misleading and sets forth harmful precedents about asexuality and celibacy being confused, but someone has made it so the page auto-resets to the edited line about asexuality if you try to change it. This willful obfuscation of the fact of his celibacy to wrongfully claim him as asexual is against the entire purpose of Wikipedia being a factual aggregation of information.

According to this article Tim Gunn DOES self-identify as asexual. I see a lot of articles leaving that bit out. A person can be both celibate and asexual, seeing as celibacy is a behavior and asexuality is a sexuality. That being said, I believe the sources should be updated to make this clear. Still with the Liz Claiborne name? If so, which one?[edit]

The Liz Claiborne corporation sold off many of its brands, including the Liz Claiborne clothing line. That was purchased by JCPenney. The Liz Claiborne corporation changed its name to "Fifth & Pacific Companies" in 2012 and again in 2014 to "Kate Spade & Company".

So, did Gunn go with the Liz Claiborne clothing line to JCPenney or did he go with the Liz Claiborne corporation to its new iteration, Fifth & Pacific Companies, then Kate Spade & Company? Or did he leave Liz Claiborne altogether prior to its reshuffling? Curiously, Wordreader (talk) 19:26, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article claimed that he was a member of the board and chief creative officer at Liz Claiborne. This was true at one time, and there are sources provided that back this up. I cannot find a current source that shows he's still a member of the board or CCO at either company. So, I removed this information from the infobox. The article as written talks about his starting at Liz Claiborne, and this information remains correct and cited. I could not find sources that talked about him leaving or that talked about the current CCO of Kate Spade & Company, Deborah Lloyd, taking over, so I didn't make any more changes to the article. —C45207 | Talk 21:05, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Constant editing to claim Tim Gunn is Asexual[edit]

Someone continuously edits the Personal Life section to claim Tim Gunn is asexual instead of celibate.

If you see the reference they cite for this claim of asexuality, it clearly says he is CELIBATE.

"Do I feel like less of a person for it? No!" he said. "I am a perfectly happy, fulfilled individual." He said he started his self-imposed celibacy as AIDS began ravaging the gay community, and that he and many other people simply retreated from that danger."

Celibacy is not at all the same as asexuality. Celibacy is a personal choice; asexuality is a sexual orientation which you are hard-wired towards from birth, just like heterosexuality and homosexuality.

Please, whoever keeps editing this, stop.

ETA: I just realized that in the Biography section, someone also edited it to say "Tim Gunn used to identify as gay but now identifies as asexual." They cite this source:

A quick CTRL+F of this article shows absolutely no mention of the word asexual. I don't know if whoever keeps putting in these edits is doing it as a joke but I think it accounts to vandalism at this point.
