Transfer of information from es:Anexo:Cronología_de_España[edit]

User talk:Dallyripple undid revision 472293555 by User:Timpo because of

  • chaotic format; (see below)
  • excessive brackets ( please be more specific)
  • (and)interwiki links (see below)

As the header says: this is an highly deficient article. A much better edition exists in the Spanish Wikipedia. Whilst aesthetics are a consideration, the primary purpose of Wikipedia is the dissemination of knowledge which can be easily understood - ideally but not essentially in the user's native tongue (otherwise why support interwikis?).

  • The table format provided is that of the Spanish version, where the second column is colored to identify rulers or regimes (missing from this time-line) rather than to include (redundant) sub-dates which anyway appear in the cited articles. (the citations DO however appear in correct chronological order). It is much easier to translate a table as an entity than to translate then cut and paste dozens of individual entries into the existing but rather inferior format. OK, so I only addressed the 21st Century. Please support your opinions with detailed criticisms on this talk page below this entry. In case this gets reverted again, see User:Timpo/Spainline
  • Interwiki links were included since some information such as recent legislation of Spain is not generally included in the English version, but, since these links are included in the Spanish time-line, I decided that, rather than delete them, to leave them intact, simply adding :es: at the front. It is not to me clear why this might be considered "excessive" in an article specifically about the history of an hispanohablante region?

Unless something is factually wrong, incomplete or a better version exists elsewhere (as in this case) the material should be left alone. IMHO if this new format was offensive, the correct action should be to take the trouble to transfer all of the given information into the preferred or existing table.

Mere presentational conformity seems to me like a very poor reason to revert a substantial contribution of some 100 links to a mere dozen?

Hence the undo shall be undone!  Timpo (talk) 12:43, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The ability to insert interwiki links does not presume that users should know other languages; if that presumption existed then the Expand language template–which may be suited to your desire to include the passage of recent laws–would not. Despite their dealing with países hispanohablantes, the articles History of Spain and History of Mexico have exactly zero interwiki links in the body of text.
The phrase "excessive brackets" refers to the open and close brackets [ and ] scattered throughout the new text. I only use one browser so I can't be sure if yours renders the text differently. "Chaotic format" refers not only to the arbitrary introduction of multiple columns to the table but to the several-pixel header running along the top (which, again, may be a browser issue). Regarding your comment that "the correct action should be to take the trouble to transfer all of the given information into the preferred or existing table," I agree completely. I wasn't entirely sure why you decided to leave this to some future editor.
That said, despite what must have seemed like a hasty reversion and a spirited defense of it, I genuinely do appreciate that you were able to add so much content. The timeline was woefully thin and the content you've added does a great deal for users' understanding (and indeed my understanding) of Spanish history. I don't have the time for Wikipedia the way I have the past several weeks; hopefully you can put this content into a coherent and consistent format. If not, I'll try to re-revert it and add your content piecemeal in the next several days. Thanks Dallyripple (talk) 23:11, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Judge Baltasar Garzón[edit]

I do not see why in the timeline of Spain there are three entries about judge Baltasar Garzon, more precisely "1998 - Judge Baltasar Garzón issued an international arrest warrant for former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.", "2008 - Garzón was charged with criminal conduct in three cases, causing an international scandal and protests" and "2010 - Garzón was granted leave to work as a consultant to the International Criminal Court at The Hague". I think these entries would fit in a Baltasar Garzon's page, but they are not even remotely relevant in the history of Spain.
