Surname[edit]

The subject's surname should be Mac Giolla and not MacGiolla, as recently changed by User:Gramscis cousin. This move contravenes the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Ireland-related articles), paragraphs 1 and 3:

1 If someone used the Irish version of his or her name, and this enjoyed and enjoys widespread usage among Irish and English speakers, this should be reflected in Wikipedia. Thus, we refer to Máirtín Ó Cadhain, not "Martin Kyne"; Tomás Ó Fiaich, not "Thomas Fee", etc.
3 In Irish orthography, there is a space between Mac and the rest of the surname, e.g. Seán Mac Eoin, Seán Mac Stíofáin etc. In English orthography, there is no space between the Mc or Mac and the rest of the surname.

I'll propose to have the move reverted. (I notice that Seán Mac Stíofáin has also been moved incorrectly).--Damac 15:20, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The list of Sinn Féin Presidents at the end of the article is somewhat misleading as it claims that Tomás Mac Giolla ceased to be president of the party in 1970 and was replaced by Ruairí Ó Brádaigh. This is not correct. A split took place in Sinn Féin in early 1970 and a breakaway group led by Ó Brádaigh was formed which took the title Provisional Sinn Féin. Tomás Mac Giolla was re-elected as President of Sinn Féin at the 1970 Árd Fheis and at every successive Árd Fheis until he retired from the position in 1988. His presidency included the transition of Sinn Féin through Sinn Féin The Workers' Party and to The Workers' Party but at no stage did Mac Giolla cease to hold the position. To be correct Tomás Mac Giolla continued as President of the very same organisation until 1988 when he was succeeded by Pronsias De Rossa, who in turn left the party in 1992. De Rossa was replaced by Marion Donnelly who was subsequently replaced by Tom French in 1994 and Sean Garland who has held the position since 1998.

Mac Giolla as mediator[edit]

User 84.203.175.114 has inserted a paragraph stating that Mac Giolla acted as a mediator between what he calls the "Marxist-Leninist" wing of the party under Sean Garland and the "social-democratic" wing under De Rossa. While Mac Giolla was a good mediator he has said on many occasions that he had no knowledge of the impending split within the party - The events of 1992 were sprung upon Mac Giolla and other party members very suddenly and there was little time for mediation.
