Stewart's Birthplace[edit]

There's some confusion about Stewart's birthplace--there's a number of websites that claim Rushville, IN, while a number of others claiming Columbus, IN; both include sites that are a bit more authoritative than just one person's random web posting: ESPN says Rushville, while Fox Sports says Columbus.

I'll try to do more research and find something conclusive in the next few days, but I'll mark it disputed for now. Chuck 13:06, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good solution. Once you find out, let us know here, and thanks for doing the legwork. -slowpokeiv 23:01, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I found my copy of Tony's book, and he states that he was born in Columbus. I stand corrected. Kswheels 18:31, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work, Kswheels. I looked in a print edition of Marquis Who's Who at my public library, and oddly enough, it claims Rushville as Stewart's birthplace, but I'd consider Stewart's own book more authoritative than Who's Who. Stewart's book on Amazon has the "search inside this book" feature, so it's easy to verify Kswheels' claim by searching on "Columbus" and "Rushville." (Apparently Stewart never even lived in Rushville until 1992!) I'm removing the disputed tags. Chuck 15:56, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I live in Columbus, Indiana. He was born here. I'm reminded of it almost every week.

Tony Stewart's name[edit]

The following links (non wikipedia) claim that Tony Stewart's middle name is Wayne.

Unless anyone can come up with a source to the contrary, please do not change it to "Maximus".-slowpokeiv 19:45, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's pretty obvious to me that "Maximus" comes from a vandal. A really annoying one at that. --D-Day Somebody talk to me. Please somebody! Anybody! 21:14, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Awards[edit]

He won a Darwin Award in darwinawards.com, but I don't found reference here. Article: http://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin2014-13.html

Added.

Name[edit]

Did Tony REALLY confirm his name is "Maximus" or "Gladiator of Speed" during the race? I doubt it myself. --D-Day(Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?) 16:25, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reassessment reasoning[edit]

Downgraded from A to B class, for the following reasons:

  • WP:CITE - lack of citations, no hard sources.

I would, however, recommend a peer review. -slowpokeiv 13:54, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

I noticed someone wrote Stewart's name as Maximus throughout the article.

To all: Please don't vandalize articles it is not funny and makes them look bad.

You don't really think these malicious halfwits will pay attention to that, do you? Atilla the Editor 04:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You coulda been #1[edit]

3 rookie season wins is pretty good. Too bad he blew a win at Loudon, which would have been his first, by running out of fuel. (Who's his crewchief, Forest Gump)? Smokey Bissoon-Dath 04:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biased[edit]

Watch out for biased remarks in the 2007 section. Someone wrote that David Gilliland Caused Stewart to wreck. Stewart was already wrecking before the contanct with Gilliland, which would probably better be described "incidental." I just think that someone may change it back.

In stewarts case, he is always the wreckee, not the wrecker. I think it should stay72.185.44.3 08:14, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2007 Season section[edit]

It is not necessary to add in every little detail of what has happened to Stewart this year. The section only needs important information or by the end of the season it will have so much info that longer than the rest of the article. For some reason, some people want to put in details from every single race. That isn't necessary. WildFan48 21:20, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Someone wrote about the Watkins Glen race on this past Sunday stating that Jeff Gordon spun out with 1 lap to go, when in actuality, there was two laps left. So, I changed it. If anyone tries to tell me that I'm wrong, you're an idiot. Proof: http://youtube.com/watch?v=snTRpKe4Rng 71.103.73.167 10:00, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Change In Appearence[edit]

I do not know if it is worth mentioning but Tony has changed his appearence this year, his hair is noticeably longer than usual...and he has a great deal of facial hair now and not to mention his weight. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.106.73.244 (talk) 20:31, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Smoke[edit]

I believe his nickname was attributed to him because of the smoke he creates after a win, when he is spinning his tires, I will find a source first though before I make any changes. Pandagirlbeth (talk) 20:26, 27 March 2008 (UTC) He got the nickname from his days in USAC/Sprint. He'd overdrive the car, or at least drive it hard, making the tires smoke. Notable events[edit]

Does anyone see a problem with just keeping notable events in the 20008 section? It's what's been done in the past, and I remember being part of various discussions on other drivers' pages and we concluded that notable events should be kept only. Otherwise the section becomes too long. Also, the 2007 section in this article is a good example of what i mean by notable events only. Thanks! Caster23 talk contribs 16:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One of the finest racers of his generation in article opening[edit]

I removed the comment that Stewart is recognized as "one of the finest racers of his generation" based on several reasons: 1) It sounds un-encyclopedic at best 2) The quote is based on a single source and undue weight would apply here especially if you are using this as basis for the opening of the article and 3) the writer of the article is someone by the name of Tommy Craggs who I wouldn't consider to be an authoritative figure in Nascar history.

It's fine to use such a quote if multiple reliable sources were using the same quote, however, if Tommy Craggs is the only source of this quote then that's not enough.

Incident with Kevin Ward, Jr.[edit]

I thought I was an auto-confirmed user, but apparently I'm not. I tried to add this but it wasn't accepted. I'm putting it here in case it is of help.

On 9 August 2014, during a race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Central Square, NY, Stewart's car contacted and ran over driver Kevin Ward, Jr. On the previous lap, Stewart appeared to have forced Ward into the wall. Ward exited his car and appeared to be gesticulating angrily at Stewart's car when the car's right rear tire appears to have come into contact with Ward, dragging him under Stewart's car and then throwing him down the racetrack.

Jim Utter, the NASCAR writer for the Charlotte Observer, tweeted that the Ontario County, NY Sheriff's department said Ward was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

  • Currently, the section is called "Return to sprint cars and Canandaigua incident", shouldn't it say "Return to sprint cars and 2014 Canandaigua incident" since Stewart has had at least one other previous incident [3] t the same track? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.225.152.154 (talk) 19:20, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think that Ward's death deserves a separate section, which should say "death" not "incident" in the heading. I suggest adding Stewart's statement, and the sheriff's statement that there is no evidence of intent on Stewart's part. What do other editors think? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:39, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The first sentence of this section is long and wordy. Someone needs to break it up so it reads better. sentence in question : "On August 9, 2014, Stewart's car struck an on-foot driver, Kevin Ward Jr., under caution after the two collided on track during a sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park; Ward died from his injuries"

Also, there needs to be some mention of the contact between Stewart and Ward that resulted in the caution during which Ward was hit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.237.39.204 (talk) 20:47, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Conjectural description of Stewart in the intro paragraph...[edit]

The intro paragraph, since 05:00 this morning (11-August) has changed, and now describes Stewart as "hot-tempered". Unless there is some evidence to suggest/prove his hot-tempered nature, then I suggest we leave that out.

  1. A three-time Sprint Cup champion, Stewart is known for his successes on multiple levels of racing, his passionate love of racing, and hot-tempered nature, which has led to many on-track altercations with other drivers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.124.6.12 (talk) 17:23, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • It has been removed, pending anyone producing reliable sources for each and every clause in the sentence, per WP:BLP. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 22:38, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Was it double-checked to be sure there weren't references for each and every clause futher down in the article? Remember that citations do not go in the lede, which summarises article content. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:37, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • Citations do go in the lead - there are some there now. But query: "hot-tempered nature" is likely nothing but an opinion and cannot be substantiated by any reliable source - and what this supposedly leads to cannot stand based on a faulty premise. Remember WP:BLP prohibits this sort of sniping. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 06:07, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Hot-tempered nature" can certainly be demonstrated with evidence including the many available first person quotes from Stewart himself. It is not an opinion whatsoever. There is considerable evidence in the form of quotes from reliable media sources of Stewart admitting his actions and spiteful nature. What kind of nonsense is this weird culture of Wikipedia editors who act as if they operate based on a set of rules, but actually just make things up as they go? How can you claim that his hot tempered nature cannot be substantiated? Did you even make an effort to research this? Absolute b.s. Are you some type of authority? Clearly not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.200.194.134 (talk) 15:35, 15 August 2014 (UTC) [reply]

  • WP:PUBLICFIGURE (part of WP:BLP) - In the case of public figures, there will be a multitude of reliable published sources, and BLPs should simply document what these sources say. If an allegation or incident is noteworthy, relevant, and well documented, it belongs in the article – even if it is negative and the subject dislikes all mention of it. If you cannot find multiple reliable third-party sources documenting the allegation or incident, leave it out.
  • Washington Post - ... fans questioning whether Stewart, known for his hot temper ...

Not necessarily conclusive, but it at least provides some basis for discussion. I guess "simply document what these sources say" means that we would have to write something like, Multiple reliable sources say Stewart is known for his hot temper.[ref1][ref2][ref3] Sheesh.

I find it interesting that neither the Times nor the Post seem at all worried about a libel lawsuit, yet we get all wound up about the idea of saying exactly the same thing and citing them. Is that because they have deeper pockets than WMF? So we couldn't afford to win such a lawsuit?   Mandruss |talk  17:26, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comma in Kevin Ward Jr.[edit]

This guideline states: Do not place a comma before Jr., Sr., or Roman numeral designation unless it is the preference of the subject or the subject's biographers.

This bio page on Kevin Ward's website shows his name as "Kevin Ward Jr.", in both title and body. Further, all other references to his full name on the site omit the comma. I think it's fair to say that the comma is not the "preference of the subject".

Yesterday, I removed the comma from references in this article. I also moved the redirect to remove the comma there. I was careful to clearly cite both of the above sources in my editsums, so as to let people know that I wasn't doing it without good reason. In other words, I followed the rules to the letter.

Today, I found that another editor, Joseph A. Spadaro, put the commas back into this article with no explanation in his or her editsums. There is no indication that s/he even looked at the sources, and s/he certainly didn't provide any rationale that they do not apply in this case. That breaks both the rules and the redirect.

I am changing the article again to remove the commas. Please get consensus here before changing that again. Thank you.   Mandruss |talk  00:56, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks. I was not aware of that rule. I thought that the rule was to always have a comma before the "Jr." title. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 04:16, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cleared Innocent?[edit]

The article says he was "cleared innocent by the grand jury". I have never heard this language used to describe a grand jury hearing. Does anyone have any source to substiantiate that something else happened aside from the grand jury failing to indict? Any source that "cleared innocent" is language used to describe such an event?
