Total Recorder is quietly sitting at the center of a great storm- the impact, for example, of Microsoft's WGA anti-piracy "initiative" would be certainly be mitigated if everyone could record sound flows. Given that, there is evidence that Total's dll libraries are also being manipulated by spyware to intercept data flows, rather than music. In this process an interesting tell-tale is left in process threads pointing to Total, making it a target for anti-virus etc. software.
