Unrealistic

India does not figure anywhere in the World’s top 25 tourist destinations. [1] Against around 75 million international tourist arrivals in France and 50 million in Spain, arrivals in India number only around 3 million. [2]. Even in the World Tourism Rankings of UN India does not figure anywhere.

Against this back drop the entry appears to be unrealistic and misleading. Moreover, what is the need for another publicity brochure when there are so many on the internet? This article should be analytical.

Agree the article reads like a tourism advert, and when I corrected some bad grammar I saw my edits reverted. RomaC 06:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

How are the states sorted?

I dont see any order in which the states are sorted in this article. If there is any particlualr reason for the current ordering, then please let me know. thunderboltz 18:58, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

I have arranged the states in alphabetical order. --Bmanisk 11:38, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
People seem to be randomly pushing up/down the listing of the states. I plan to rearrange the ordering so that there is an alphabetic listing again shortly. If anyone has a valid reason for the current ordering please add your justification here.(Leotolstoy and Bmanisk are at least two people who tried to correct this in the past)-Deepraj | Talk 10:11, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

I changed enormously because this article looked so messed up. Wikipedia is not a photo album or a place to promote tourism. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for godsake. There is a fixed format to be followed while writing an article. Dumping each and every detail with hundreds of photos is not going to help. We have to give links to main articles in each section where reader can go and look for what he wants. I'm cleaning up that article which has already consumed huge amount of my time. I know all your edits are in good faith and you want to contribute immensely to that article. All images you have added are beautiful. But unfortunately, wikipedia doesn't work that way. Thanks for your contributions anyways. Now, don't revert back. Gnanapiti 03:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Most of the images in this article where already there, I simply compacted them to make the article smaller as it was getting a bit long. The images that I put in after wards I can reduce and leave the drop down boxes for the over use of examples and see also lists this article has. Also I see that someone else has reverted this article and reduced the images which I will pitch in and remove some more. صلاة اليهود في كنيس بمناسبة يوم كيبور
I really don't understand. The issue is not only the number of images here. Bigger issue is format and style of this article. Again I'm pointing you to WP:SS to learn more about how a summary style article should look. We don't need all these drop down boxes in each and every section. We have to give link to main article in the section and give a brief introduction about what we are talking. This article is still unencyclopedic, no matter how many drop down boxes you add. I didn't understand why someone pitched in all of a sudden and reverted all my edits without any discussion here. This article needs a major cleanup. Gnanapiti 06:50, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

The idea of the drop down box is to hide long lists of misc information like examples or see also lists. As you can see the article has been deemed to long. So the idea was to shorten the article without deleting someones input. I also put the images into galleries to save room in the article. Instead of having one gigantic gallery at the bottom, I have spread them throughout the article. I can remove the images from the drop down boxes, but like I stated before the whole concept of the drop down box is to hide misc data that takes up lots of space in the article. في بمناమొదటి한국어 日本語

We don't necessarily have to delete someone's huge effort in order to shorten the article. As I have said earlier more than once, we have to move the content from this summary style article to main articles for which the link has to be given here. Gigantic gallery at the bottom has to be cleaned up, and that's what I was up to until I was abruptly stopped with some reverts. Miscellaneous data is not for hiding, but instead for moving from here to main articles. This is a summary style article and has to remain one. Hope this clarifies. Gnanapiti 15:46, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
The format for this article Cronulla, New South Wales doesn't look all that bad. Let this be an example along with this article Tourism in Sydney. The format in the tourism in Sydney article might need to be fixed slightly. في بمناమొదటి한국어 日本語

Drop down boxes are discouraged in article space. Please do not use. Drop down boxes are for user spaces or talk spaces etc. Never use this in main article, as article should support print version. And dont revert just like that, give respect to other's efforts. Lara bran 04:42, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Its not "Tourism in India by state", dont expand states that have main articles already. Instead develop articles by type of tourism like adventure tourism, Nature tourism etc. User:Mindys12345 please dont revert other editor's changes, give respect to other's efforts. Try to incorporate their changes. Lara bran 04:58, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Thats not exactly what the other editor did, he actually made it look a lot worse and as for drop down boxes well I got the idea from another article. I will get a second opinion. I also think that a lot of the text in this article was copied and pasted from websites or copied from travel bochures. I have cought other people out doing this.في بمناమొదటి한국어 日本語
TOURISM BY STATE. No I am not increasing, I am decreasing, I have even created a seperate article for Tourism in Maharashtra, which was an entire section in this article. If someone wants to print they can copy and paste. في بمناమొదటి한국어 日本語
Im not reverting your changes. You carry on, but when others contribute dont revert, instead accommodate them. Show me another article where you seen drop down box, please do show me. Its policy, not conflict between you and me. "Too long" is by memory size not by length of page (and collapsible dont reduce it below 32kB). Simply make section for state and expand wont do. Tourism in Maharashtra like articles are just fine, but paste {{stub}} in that article so that many others will come to help expand page, Im doing that for you.
Lara bran 06:04, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup

I gave it a go. Im not sure div tags are allowed in article. They can be used only in foot sections. Thanks. Lara_bran 09:08, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Please Note

Hi all,

I have gone thru every section of this page and I have corrected many many grammar mistakes, added much needed detail/references, and deleted many POV edits and deleted obvious spam. Please keep these things in mind:

  • This is not a tourist brochure. "Assam is one of the most beautiful places in the world with many foreign tourists agreeing to this" is NOT a good addition to this ENCYCLOPEDIC article.
  • This article is written in WP:Summary Style, meaning that very specific details about a neighborhood or city do not belong here. Please refrain from adding lists of touristic cities, lists of tourist attractions, etc. Lists and other tables do not belong here.
  • This is not a photo gallery. The photo gallery is called Wiki Commons. Photo galleries do not belong here.

Sirpur in Chhattisgarh

The article now reads:

Main attractions of Chhattisgarh are Chitrakot Waterfalls, Kutumsar Caves, Ramgarh and Sita Bengra, Bhoramdeo temple, Sirpur, Rajim, Ratanpur and Malhar.

This is consistent with what the official district web site says, which is:

Bhoramdeo, Rajim, Sirpur, Tala, Malhar and Sheorinarayan are prime sites for heritage tourism.

In the 2001 census there were six villages named Sirpur in Chhattisgarh:

Which of these villages is the tourism destination? --Bejnar (talk) 01:35, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Too much vandalism if you ask me, request protection?

Today I've had to revert the table with statistics of tourism by state to my earlier revision because two vandals added nonsense to it. And this isn't the first time this happened with this article. I'm getting tired of the intensive policing this article apparently requires. What do my fellow editors think? I'd like to get this article semi-protected indefinitely, but that's not likely to happen soon. --AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 11:05, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

To be honest, now that I'm evaluating every edit to this article since January 2013, I've also seen quite a few anonymous users make valuable contributions to this article. So instead of protection, it's probably necessary to police this article for vandalism properly. This article is on my watchlist and I'll keep a closer look on it from now on.--AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 11:31, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Major problems

While the lead of this article is pretty good, most of the body reads like a tourist brochure with lists of places to visit but no narrative on their significance to the topic in hand. Multiple sections are also completely unreferenced.

Would it be unreasonable to suggest that about 90% of the content here should be deleted? Lineslarge (talk) 12:23, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

I propose culling all of the lists which appear in the subsections for each state. Text from the main page that was misplaced by an ip user

India is a good place no doubt i am a indian but recent days studies found that ofcourse india is safe to visit but you must be extra careful about the place which you may visit. You need to get references and plan your trip with good care so that you will not run into dangers. You can contact police at all given times and keep references of your respective embassy numbers when you get into trouble just let the police know what is the exact trouble you are having. You just need to have a nominal sim card in the phone you can dial 100 in india at all given times and police will be glad to help you whenever required all major cities today have a good law and order system so I request all the tourists coming to india please do not fear you have got good protection and a great legal system to help you everytime. Recently indian courts have become very good and contact any local advocate for any problems or what so ever.

The challenges faced by tourism in India are, according to reliable sources, the lack of security (especially for women and children who are trafficked), the lack of infrastructure and accommodations, lack of professionalism, lack of disabled friendly facilities. Some of these sources are

@User:Orientls and User:MapSGV how would you like to word the section? Elektricity (talk) 04:07, 28 February 2018 (UTC)|}
Don't need because you are distracting readers and tourism is not directly responsible. They are outdated reports, self published sources and WP:UNDUE. Since tourism is increasing there are clearly no major challenges that are affecting tourism. No one is perfect. Information already exists in other articles like Economic development in India, Rape in India, and others. We don't claim, for example, prevalence of terrorism, lack of infrastructure and other problems in Pakistan[3][4] are negatively affecting tourism,(Tourism in Pakistan) and US telling others to "reconsider" traveling Pakistan.[5] Such news reporting is not needed. — MapSGV (talk) 04:30, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

:::User:MapSGV That may be your opinion and you are entitled to that, but we wikipedians do not WP:OWN any articles so here we have to go by policy. These are not reports, these are studies that have been conducted by researchers. Please refer to this article during this discussion. Is WP:UNDUE and WP:NOTNEWS your only concern here? For that can be quickly alleviated if you look at the scholarly sources I quoted. Most of them have made the challenges section a part of Indian tourism and there exists a high prevalence of such discussion in scholarly sources. Please respond here when you have clicked through the sources to see that these are not news. Some of these have been commissioned by the Indian Government themselves. Elektricity (talk) 04:37, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Using opinion pieces, self published sources and unreliable sources like Gyan Publishing, IGI Global, and calling them scholarly makes my above point even more credible. Only reliable source was the one from researchgate but it also speaks of the large improvements frequently. That's how your "challenges" become questionable and undue. — MapSGV (talk) 04:51, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

:::::@MapSGV there is a study commissioned by the indian government, then there are journal articles. Gyan publishing is not an unreliable source as you claim. If it is so, perhaps you can take it to a noticeboard to find out. Please make one comment where you mention all of your concerns, first it was WP:UNDUE and WP:NOTNEWS and now you have gone onto the debate on sourcing. If sourcing is your concerns, please provide valid evidence. The official tourism site of India and other international journals cannot be just shrugged off. Elektricity (talk) 04:57, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

MapSGV is right with his evaluation of information. Your sources (mostly unreliable) and information would be WP:DUE only if you had evidence of decline in Indian tourism. It would be necessary at such point to detail the challenges the way you want us to do by creating a separate section after adding a stray sentence on lead. You could make a two liner out of this material and insert somewhere in existing section after providing correct rebuttal that also found in your source. But for now the article is totally relevant to tourism and any distraction, unless too important, would be undue. Orientls (talk) 06:30, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

I'm totally against deletion of challenges subsection, which is a blatant practice of censorship. I do think we should present the article properly and fairly, both good and bad, pro and cons, strength and weaknesses. Avoid forced censorship and a plain promotion by writing solely in rosy-hued travel guide-style narrative, which might misled readers to believe that everything is perfect in Indian tourism industry. Having contributed to some tourism-related articles, addressing challenges/problems is a fairly common practice, and actually being encouraged. For example, in another tourism-related article; Challenges to the Indonesian tourism industry fairly address this issue. Gunkarta  talk  07:36, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Survey

  • Include As Indian Tourism faces a number of challenges like lack of infrastructure, lack of security (terrorism and assaults on females etc.) and a number of other problems, we should include this section. Elektricity (talk) 06:59, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

But stop edit warring until the consensus is reached. I don't see any helpful material here, only view it as misleading for readers and they would question if there are any real problems despite increase or its all just a big hype by POV pushers using unreliable sources. • Include but not anecdotal news stories. General statements from governmental sources such as travel warnings, WP:RS reports about statements by India's tourism minister, and WP:RS specifically about challenges to tourism are acceptable, but WP:NOTNEWS. Citing news stories about specific crimes to support an opinion is WP:SYNTHESIS. Jack N. Stock (talk) 12:59, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Yes, books from established publishers and peer-reviewed studies in respected journals can be reliable sources. I was addressing the citations that were used in the reversed edit. However, a newspaper that we consider a reliable source is OK when the subject of a major article is tourism in India. WP:RS addresses this, we don't need to go into detail here. Jack N. Discussion of regions

I think India is primarily divided into following regions.. The category of states may differ on one's basis. So let me know if anyone has some suggestions. So, 1.) North India(which includes Union territories of Ladhakh, J&K, New Delhi(NCR), Chandigarh and states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan)

2.) Central India(which includes Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh)

3.) East India (which includes West Bengal, Odisha)

4.) North-East India (Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura)

5.) West India (which includes states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Union territories of Diu and Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli)

6.) South India (which includes Union territories of Puducherry and states of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerela, Tamil Nadu)

7.)South-West India (which includes the union territory of Lakshadweep Islands)

8.) South-East India (which includes the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands)

I think this kind of division will showcase more on a region than merging two regions together. Especially like North and Central India. Bihar in no sense a part of North India. Instead, it is located in Central India.

I hope others agree with me on this. If everyone agrees, we can also update the regions as so. Thanks for your time! 103.253.203.135 (talk) 01:28, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
