I may work on this later, but let me note that this page requires cleanup because of spelling mistakes and the poor grammar employed, and it appears quite POV in some sections (eg, "It would be wiser to plant the indiginous crops and extend the market of these in the west." It says as an example of a tropical plant crop "morus alba." This is the mulberry tree, which is a temperate tree. I think it is wrong to put it under tropical agriculture. What do you think? Saritamackita 21:46, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Morus alba[edit]

If I am no mistaken, the mulberry tree (the white one, used for silk production by providing food for insects which' cocoon is used) originally came from China (via the silk route). China aldough partly temperate is I think also Sub-Tropical, aldough I am not certain of the place where the mulberry was planted and of the crop itself.

Major constraints- mild winters[edit]

In the article there is talk about mild winters and the idea that tropical plants cannot endure the attacks from pests from the moment at which they start to grow. This offcourse should be discarded as:

plants native to the environment are used to this and are well adapted against it, if they were not than there would be no vegetable life in the tropics

This offcourse is not the case if not-native plants are used, yet the article does not state which kind of plants are referred to.

Please adjust or discard this from the article.

PS: in the tropics and subtropics no winter exists, only wet and dry seasons so this too is fault

Split up of article[edit]

The article "tropical agriclture" seems to have lost its meaning since agriculture is the same everywhere and whether its tropical or temperate depends on the crops used. As these crops have all been split up correctly (in list of herbs, list of fruit, ...) it may be best to split up this article aswell, discarting the incorrect term/article "tropical agriculture"

It’s a valid term. Google returns 1,280,000 hits for "tropical agriculture".

Also there’s the International Center for Tropical Agriculture [1] and the US Government maintains the Tropical Agriculture Research Station [2]. The University of Florida maintains the Center For Tropical Agriculture [3], and you can even take courses from Cornell University on the subject [4].

Merge proposal: Trophort/Tropical agriculture[edit]

Tropical horticulture is a redirect to Tropical agriculture, which makes sense to me, so I can't see a good reason for having a Trophort article. I therefore suggest this latter article should be merged into Tropical agriculture. I agree. I was just about to perform a pagemove from Trophort to Tropical agriculture but then I saw that we basically have two articles about the same subject. Green Revolution[edit]

Umm, does anyone else think this section doesn't quite fit under the heading "tropical agriculture?" It's quite general and applies to ALL agriculture, not just agriculture in the tropics. I think I agree. It's unclear to me whether the Green Revolution was exclusive to tropical climates or whether it was just very significant to them. Also, the sentence "It can be concluded that the Green Revolution was a success, with only a minor flaw: although the crops gave more yield, they were more subject to disease since this was not a primary concern in the program." is pretty biased, and leaves out the fact that while many "green revolution" crop varieties have a higher yield per area of land, they also require a good deal more water to produce. "Low economic input in Africa"[edit]

I removed this paragraph, because:

There were no citations
Economic structures change over time, even in Africa.
The paragraph talked about "supermarkets". The relevance of supermarkets to this article is unclear at best.

I would not object to the return of a better-written, more closely relevant, and above-all, cited paragraph on the same subject. But as the paragraph was, it simply didn't seem worth keeping. CometEncke (talk) 09:39, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
