Is Tobit a Turkish Draughts variant or just a variant of Draughts in general?[edit]

The abstract from the source says this in English

"This article describes the formation and development of the Tobit game in Khakassia, traced the history of the formation of this game as a sport, with the holding of competitions. Comparison of the game of Tobit with Turkish checkers “Dama” gives reason to assert the relatedness of these two games." (TÜRK HALKLARININ GELENEKSEL SPOR OYUNLARI VIII pg. 61)

Is this because they're both draughts? Because they influenced each other? Or because Tobit is derived from Dama? T0afer (talk) 17:48, 21 October 2020 (UTC)T0afer[reply]

Recommend moving Tobit to its own page or to the general draughts page unless this can be clarified? It appears to be an orthogonal draughts variant and not specifically a Turkish draughts variant, but I can't read the offered source. I'll let this stand for a few months and then just move it if nothing comes up. If anyone disagrees due to content in the sources let me know or move it back. I guess it will depend upon how closely a game should resemble Turkish draughts to be considered its variant. Is Armenian draughts a Turkish draughts variant? I've always considered it to be a closely related game. I look at it like human family relationships. Who do you consider to be family? Only siblings, or do you extend it to first cousins, or do you extend it to second cousins, and so on. At one point is a person no longer family? Or do you consider them to be all family, but you prefer to only have immediate family members (i.e. siblings) to be considered a "close enough" variant. I have no problem with Tobit having its own page, if you or someone can transfer the information into a new page, I would greatly appreciate it. I've also recently wrote another variant, Keny. If you like you can transfer that onto the Tobit page in that way we can have a list of related orthogonal draughts variants, or keep it in the Turkish draughts article, or create a separate article. I don't mind writing a separate article for any of them, but my impression is that a game has to be significantly different enough to qualify for a separate Wikipedia article. I prefer that Tobit and Keny be included in an article that lists orthogonal draughts variants in that way people can compare them and understand this family of games, and I'm more than willing to create a separate Wikipedia article for that. In addition, there is already a Russian Wikipedia article on Tobit (English Translation version): https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&pto=aue&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ru&sp=nmt4&u=https://ru.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%25D0%25A2%25D0%25BE%25D0%25B1%25D0%25B8%25D1%2582&usg=ALkJrhjnPN3irGY5imf4i5gkmT1yvydc_w
and also on Keny (Ossetian checkers): https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%25D0%259A%25D0%25B5%25D0%25BD%25D1%258B&prev=search&pto=aue
These two articles are well written. I would be okay with them being copied and pasted instead of having to rewrite the articles. They also have diagrams. Aamma58 (talk) 11:31, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Aamma58[reply]
The more I think about the more I tend to favor grouping them all under the draughts banner rather than here. And I agree the distinction between orthogonal draughts and diagonal draughts probably warrants a subcategory within the draughts page and organized according to that layout. Armenian draughts isn't necessarily descended from Turkish draughts directly. I think we should create a page for both the tobit and Keny variants, link them at the bottom of Turkish draughts in the "see also" section, and then do some work on the main page of the draughts article. I kind of don't like the list on that page anyway. It might be a good excuse to overhaul the organization. I think wee just keep the work already done and supplement from the Russian page rather than try to just translate it. T0afer (talk) 13:23, 4 November 2020 (UTC)T0afer[reply]
Created New page for Tobit and removed section from variants. Linked to Tobit page at bottom of Turkish draughts and will do the same for Keny when I get the chance. T0afer (talk) 15:58, 5 November 2020 (UTC)T0afer[reply]
Created New page for Keny and linked to it in see also section. Attributed both pages to Aamma58 in notes on page creation. T0afer (talk) 13:41, 6 November 2020 (UTC)T0afer[reply]
Thanks for creating the Tobit and Keny pages. A wonderful job on improving them also.

Strategy Section[edit]

Article would greatly benefit from a strategy section discussing unique problems and tactics that differentiate Dama from other draughts variants, especially international draughts and checkers. This would probably be more beneficial even than a history section. T0afer (talk) 14:56, 22 October 2020 (UTC)T0afer[reply]
