Combat Action Ribbon[edit]

There seems to be a lot of tit for tat editing with respect to the KEARSARGE's CAR. The KEARSARGE was fired upon with 4 Katyuasha rockets while pier-side in Aqaba, Jordan. While none of the missiles struck the ship, they missed a direct hit by mere feet. One rocket struck the pier, killing a member of the Jordanian military. The instruction outlining the requirements for awarding a Combat Action Ribbon to a Navy vessel clearly stated that a ship only need be fired upon, requiring no return of fire. While the USMC has/had a different set of requirements for awarding the CAR to Marines, and many Marines were adamantly opposed to the KEARSARGE's receipt of the ribbon, Department of the Navy requirements were met, and the ribbon was awarded. While the CAR has a unique place in USMC tradition, the time to complain about policies, and to seek changes in those polices is definitely BEFORE the policies are enacted/implemented! THe Sailors of the KEARSARGE did nothing wrong, and should not be scoffed at for their receipt of the ribbon. Remember that a few feet would have led to the death of many Sailors. Proposed merge with Operation Noble Obelisk[edit]

probably not much more to it than this. Many g-hits with same info. apparently serves as a good example. preserve info in stronger article. Dlohcierekim 00:38, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merge sounds like a bad idea. Operation anything is a distinct ding an sich (res ipsa loquitur) and a ship is an entirely separate thing. ;Bear (talk) 05:03, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a great idea. Unless someone knows specifically about this operation they'll never know it is part of this ships history. I was on the Kearsarge when this operation took place and was suprised when i didn't see it listed in the ships operational history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.144.100.200 (talk) 04:37, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose It's a distinct operation, so it would be a bad idea to merge it at this time. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 15:47, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
