"Went into ordinary"[edit]

This is something of a term of art and as such somewhat jargony for a general-interest encyclopaedia; however I suppose that it can be argued that those interested in such an article are generally familiar with the term. 75.246.30.22 (talk) 23:29, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Acting as flagship for two years, she protected commerce and suppressed the slave trade off the African coast."[edit]

The text of the headline (out of the article's first paragraph) says the exact opposite of a quote in F. Douglass's "My Bondage and My Freedom": "Wendell Phillips — the eloquent New England orator — on his return from Europe, in 1842, said, “As I stood upon the shores of Genoa, and saw floating on the placid waters of the Mediterranean, the beautiful American war ship Ohio, with her masts tapering proportionately aloft, and an eastern sun reflecting her noble form upon the sparkling waters, attracting the gaze of the multitude, my first impulse was of pride, to think myself an American; but when I thought that the first time that gallant ship would gird on her gorgeous apparel, and wake from beneath her sides her dormant thunders, it would be in defense of the African slave trade, I blushed in utter shame for my country.”"

The quote above is a primary source and therefore normally not usable without a secondary source to put it in context. I'd be interested in seeing such secondaries. BusterD (talk) 13:03, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the quote used in your section head is word for word out of the DANSF source (a generally reliable secondary source). BusterD (talk) 13:08, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
