Bayern Munich squad[edit]

Why is Hoeness listed as manager of Bayern when it should be Magath? Kingjeff 21:51, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In Germany, there is usually a coach (Trainer) and a manager, which supervise distinct areas. Hoeneß was, at the time you wrote the question, manager, a position now occupied by Matthias Sammer; coach was Magath (who is famous for the exception of combining the posts of coach and of manager, as in Wolfsburg and Schalke, but he did not get so much power with Bayern), and is now Jupp Heynckes.--91.34.240.77 (talk) 12:54, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Remove ligature eszett because not English[edit]

I removed all instances that I could of the ligature eszett.

This letter (which I will refer to here as ~b since it is not on my keyboard) does not exist in the English alphabet, and there is a standard substitute -ss, so ~b should never be used.

Wiki Manual of style is my authority:

Naming conventions section:

(1) German proper names should be treated with care, and attention to English practice

(2) The title of an article should generally use the version of the name of the subject which is most common in the English language

1-2 should provide me with a prima facie case, but an editor has pointed out that unrerasonable legalistic objection might be made since I have not "documented" basis for my change.

That is ridiculous, because burden of documnetation should be upon those who use letters which do not exist in the English alphabet. I have never in a lifetime of reading English-language texys ever seen it used except by Wikipedia and in a U-boat site edited by a Icelander who might not know better.

However, to forestall "documentation" objection, here is what I have come up with:

As you can see “Hoeness” is the version used.

I also googled the next five pages and can confirm no use of ~B by any other English book source.

I also found that the name “Uli Hoeness” does not occur in encyclopedias Brittanica, Columbia/Bartleby and How Stuff Works.'

However, it does occur twice as “Hoeness” in infoplease:'

Please discuss this on the Manual of style talk page. Such changes should not be forced on one article without consensus of the community. In any case changing all the names within an article without changing the article's name is not sensible. No discussion found at suggested link to WT:FOOTY. With Mr. Hoeness prominent in the news in 2013 (I came here after reading a New York Times article), this subject should be addressed. Apparently nothing has changed since 2010. Use of the eszet in English I agree is not appropriate. English speakers often do not even know what it is. € 18m fraud: How notable?[edit]

Anonymous user «2.85.2.209» did some edits I question:

She/he removed the € 18m defrauding sum BBC reported, leaving the previous sums («between €3.2 million and €7 million») standing.
Also, the entry was moved away from the introduction.

Possibly not. But at the moment the sums vary wildly (today it is supposed to be € 27 million [1]) and as the proclamation of sentence is supposed to be on Thursday, I'd wait until then. --Jaellee (talk) 18:25, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The current trial is just about to find a sentence (Strafmaß). It is not about to calculate the correct tax debt. For the trial it is pretty much irrelevant, whether the sum is 20 or 30 Mio. The witness for the prosecution made an estimation of 27,2 Mio EUR and the defense accepted this sum, as you can see in the final plea. There will be a parallel process of tax assessment that can take several month, where the exact tax debt will be calculated. --Alexrk2 (talk) 12:26, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is not irrelevant whether the sum is €3 or €27 million. If the number would have remained at €3m (plus the fact that he turned himself over plus good social prognosis, life achievements, etc.), it seems certain now that he would have been spared prison and got a parole sentence (possible for up to 2 years). --2.236.198.248 (talk) 15:21, 14 March 2014 (UTC) (Bayern fan too)[reply]

Maybe, but the exact debt is irrelevant for the sentence. It is only so far relevant as to make a judgment over the weight of the crime. The point is however, that there will be no correct calculation of the tax debt within the trial. The estimated sum, that has been taken into account for the sentence, was 28,5 Mio EUR.
