Is it really important to note that the Brooklyn Dodgers are now the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New York Giants are now in San Fransisco? It was a pennant race between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants-- where they moved after is not at all relevant to this story. "The National League pennant race of 1951 belongs to the ages. There has been nothing like it before or since. Nor will it come again. Summarizing the 1951 race is akin to summarizing King Lear. Major Overhaul[edit]

I just finished reading this novel and thought I could add some more information to the article. Everything that was there before is still in the article, I just tried to add more information on characters, criticism, awards, etc. I really struggled with how to describe the characters and plot and how much information to provide. I know the spoiler tag is out of vogue, but not using it makes me hesitant to reveal big plot elements. Anyway, since it was such a large change, I thought I should post something about it here. Lead discussion[edit]

Looking at this talk, I'm not sure how much traffic this page is getting, but none-the-less, I'll bring this up on the talk. The lead places some heavy emphasis on the NY Times book review and it's ranking of this book. Explanation of the title[edit]

Underworld isn't just the name of a 1927 gangster film. It is lost film of Sergei Eisenstein and is screened by an artsy crowd in the course of the novel. BubbleDine (talk) 00:40, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it not also obviously, especially given that DeLillo is a child of Italian immigrants, a reference to the Inferno of Dante? Shay's troubled relationship with his wife (=Beatrice) and subsequent redemption, as well as the tortured souls he encounters, all suggest the overarching poem of European literature: and through it, a shadowing of Vergil's Aeneid, wherein the lost baseball is a kind of golden bough, the passport to a vanished world.

New plot summary[edit]

I rewrote the plot summary with more details based on my notes from reading the novel a year ago. It's difficult to summarize a highly non-linear and episodic novel like Underworld, and the section would benefit from someone who has read it more recently or who has better notes.
