Are the references to Tony Blair strictly necessary?

He's a barrister. Barristers in England are required by law to accept instructions in any case they are competent to argue. Had he not acted in the cases concerned he could have been disciplined for professional misconduct.

Yes, Nethermere is a formative case, and while the cab-rank rule is certainly there, don't you think that it is important to understand why his government worked against introducing protective legislation? It's not much of a coincidence that the same work he did for his pupil master, Derry Irvine, was the same work he did as PM and Irvine passed cases on as LC.
