Extended play or album?[edit]

untitled unmastered. clocks in at 34 minutes and 4 seconds long. My question: should this be considered short enough to be classified as an extended play, or long enough to be an album? There has always been a debate over what is the cut-off for an EP, especially on Wikipedia. In my opinion, the 30-minute album is not an alien concept; Linkin Park had a 37 minute album called Living Things, and Wolfmother's latest album, Victorious, clocks in at 35 minutes. However, Wikipedia has defined works such as Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, a 34-minute collection, as an extended play. So I ask, in your opinion, what should untitled unmastered. be defined as on Wikipedia? Philip Terry Graham 05:27, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Its an extended play. Directly from the wikipedia article: "In an interview with GRAMMY.com Kendrick Lamar said the new, untitled song he performed at the end of his politically-charged Grammy medley came from a trove of tracks that did not make it onto his third studio album, To Pimp a Butterfly: "I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love [with] where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album." Lamar had performed unreleased, untitled songs during TV appearances. He dropped the first on one of the final episodes of the The Colbert Report in December 2014, and later during a January episode of The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon."
Unless we want to be contradictory, by definition, its an extended play 24.186.126.78 (talk) 05:29, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@24.186.126.78: Per WP:Stick to source, (temporary) we should pick Album. If his label don't say otherwise. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 05:36, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sources say album (I think they are just assuming since it was just released), but this screams EP: 8 untitled songs. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 05:26, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should be defining pieces by the amount of tracks. Thick as a Brick only has two tracks, Wish You Were Here has five; Sigur Ros has an album where it was eight untitled tracks as well, and they're all unanimously accepted as albums.
True, I guess we should wait til Kendrick himself refers it as an EP (?) When is an EP itunes put "- EP" on the title Cornerstonepicker (talk) 05:34, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • But its not an album, it was released out of the blue with no singles and nothing behind its creation or production. You can't really call it an album, more like an...extended play. Its also a collection of tracks that were going to be part of an original piece but then recollected and put together into its own...like an extended play, its also 30-35 minutes long, like many EPs are (such as Slim Shady EP) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.186.126.78 (talk) 05:53, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the circumstance of release should define an album, either; The King of Limbs, Beyoncé and Anti were released under similar circumstances, and they weren't labelled as extended plays. Philip Terry Graham 06:00, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Rolling Stone just called it an album. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 06:03, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd like to say it's a mini-album to be entirely honest. ~Beg217 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beg217 (talkcontribs) 06:22, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would say it is neither a "studio album" or "EP", it should be categorized as a "compilation album". In a similar vein to Nas and his compilation "The Lost Tapes". Very similar scenario, with a collection of left over tracks which have been packaged together as an individual project. Should be listed as such on his discography page also. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.100.135.4 (talk) 09:37, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is a compilation album comprising of unreleased tracks previously recorded over the past couple of years. Personally, I think it is too long to be considered an EP: typically anything under 30 minutes qualifies as an EP, regardless of number of tracks. This is a compilation album, not an official studio album, because this material was recorded during or prior to the making of To Pimp a Butterfly, not new, original material that Lamar wrote or recorded during 2016. MTE. For me Compilation album works perfectly, is still an album, but is a collection of prev unreleased material. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 15:09, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I second this. "Compilation album" would work perfectly. Aria1561 (talk) 21:48, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Compilation album is the best way to describe it.1Sire (talk) 10:30, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How is this not an EP? Compilation album seems to be more like a "greatest hits" type thing. It's nowhere near long enough or cohesive enough to be an album. 130.45.43.153 (talk) 11:27, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kendrick Lamar "untitled unmastered" (production credits)[edit]

the production credit you have now for Untitled 01 8/192014 is wrong, Ritz Reynolds produced it. here is a link from philly.com http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inthemix/Kendrick-Lamar-surprise-releases-8-song-untitled-unmastered.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by AntFarlow (talkcontribs) 01:35, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a reliable source. However, it seems XXL will update the credits they have published "The complete credits are said to be available soon." Let's wait. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 01:43, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Compilation Album[edit]

Is there a reliable source calling it a compilation album? If not, its a studio album by default. ≫ Lil-Unique1 -{ Talk }- 12:02, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
