Extended play or album?[edit]

untitled unmastered. clocks in at 34 minutes and 4 seconds long. My question: should this be considered short enough to be classified as an extended play, or long enough to be an album? There has always been a debate over what is the cut-off for an EP, especially on Wikipedia. In my opinion, the 30-minute album is not an alien concept; Linkin Park had a 37 minute album called Living Things, and Wolfmother's latest album, Victorious, clocks in at 35 minutes. However, Wikipedia has defined works such as Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, a 34-minute collection, as an extended play. Its an extended play. Directly from the wikipedia article: "In an interview with GRAMMY.com Kendrick Lamar said the new, untitled song he performed at the end of his politically-charged Grammy medley came from a trove of tracks that did not make it onto his third studio album, To Pimp a Butterfly: "I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love [with] where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album." Lamar had performed unreleased, untitled songs during TV appearances. He dropped the first on one of the final episodes of the The Colbert Report in December 2014, and later during a January episode of The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon."

I don't think we should be defining pieces by the amount of tracks. Thick as a Brick only has two tracks, Wish You Were Here has five; Sigur Ros has an album where it was eight untitled tracks as well, and they're all unanimously accepted as albums.

But its not an album, it was released out of the blue with no singles and nothing behind its creation or production. You can't really call it an album, more like an...extended play. I don't think the circumstance of release should define an album, either; The King of Limbs, Beyoncé and Anti were released under similar circumstances, and they weren't labelled as extended plays. Philip Terry Graham 06:00, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would say it is neither a "studio album" or "EP", it should be categorized as a "compilation album". In a similar vein to Nas and his compilation "The Lost Tapes". Very similar scenario, with a collection of left over tracks which have been packaged together as an individual project. It is a compilation album comprising of unreleased tracks previously recorded over the past couple of years. Personally, I think it is too long to be considered an EP: typically anything under 30 minutes qualifies as an EP, regardless of number of tracks. This is a compilation album, not an official studio album, because this material was recorded during or prior to the making of To Pimp a Butterfly, not new, original material that Lamar wrote or recorded during 2016.
