Since the name Uralian orogeny is used for a Neoproterozoic orogeny, I wonder if the name is right. I don't believe there would be two orogenies with the same name. Woodwalker (talk) 08:46, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wasn't previously aware of the earlier event. Was it the Timanide Orogen? To avoid confusion perhaps this article content should be merged to Uralian orogenic belt (a stub I just discovered) and this article could be about the Neoprot. event. Vsmith (talk) 15:44, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Uralian orogenic belt seems to use a geologic name for a topographic feature. I find that puzzling, but who knows people in Russia follow outcrops (rather than mountain chains) to define the boundary between the continents? The Uralian phase (as I've seen it used) was at about 1,4-1,0 Ga, Timanide was in the range 700-500 Ma and is thought to be the lateral continuation of Cadomian (Europe) and Amazonian (South America). It's possible the Permian phase of the Ural mountains (collision between Laurussia and Siberia) is also called Uralian, I'll try to find out. Woodwalker (talk) 18:56, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
