Why does Varèse Sarabande exist?

I would suggest that the list of releases in the most important point for any record label. All other details are footnotes compared to what they have produced, which is their entire point for existing at all. There would be no record label at all were it not for their releases, so why should there be a Wikipedia page at all if it is going to exclude the company’s output. If Varese Sarabande is not important to film music that why does this page exist? If they are important then each and every release that they have produced is part of why they are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DeWinter1 (talkcontribs) 12:39, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

A summary of their important releases would be perfectly encyclopedic! I would suggest, since you seem to be familiar with their products, that you compose a few paragraphs making a summary of their important releases. If you're interested, Capitol Records seems to be a good page, giving a timeline of the company's history and the artists/albums it has produced, without resorting to a bulky, unnecessary list. I would argue that they list a few too many specific artists, but I believe it is a good comprimise.
I'm going to see if I can get a neutral third-party opinion on this matter at WP:Third opinion, if that's okay with you. In the meantime, I don't object to you expanding the article, just don't add those bulky lists back in. Please be sure to give reliable sources for whatever you add. -RunningOnBrains 07:58, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

It would seem that someone went to great effort to document the company's output and value. Seems odd to allow a Film Score Monthly list but not coverage of Varèse Sarabande. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DeWinter1 (talkcontribs) 12:34, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Third Opinion

I would say whether to include a full discography on this page would depend on how many albums have been produced. For example, Key Sounds Label (currently a Good Article) does include the list, but it's able to pull this off becuase the list is relatively small. However, if this edit is anything to go by, I would strongly suggest moving it to List of Varèse Sarabande albums. Including the list on this page brings the file size to almost 120kb, which is far too big. If you guys decide to take that route, it may even be necessary to split this article into two or more parts due to the list's size. Bettia (bring on the trumpets!) 15:57, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

3POx2 Agree with Bettia. If that's the list, it's way too long to stay here. It gets in the way of the text and makes the article all but unreadable. NJGW (talk) 03:39, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Fourth Opinion

Hello, Just chiming in as I feel the list of albums complements the Varese articles which, I would agree, does interrupt the flow of the page as an article, but IS important as Varese Sarabande is the most prolific soundtrack producing label fast approaching a milestone of 1000 releases. Since you offer making a separate page just for the list, then let's work on doing so. Then all the information can be shared here without further editorial and editing conflicts. 06MAR09 Cheers, -DM —Preceding unsigned comment added by DeviantMan (talkcontribs) 17:42, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

A plan of action?

Sorry for not replying sooner. I believe it may be best to split the list into two or three lists rather than one long list. Question is, what's the best way to go about this? As far as I can tell, the series and years ranges are as follows: -

  • 47000 Series - 1985 to 1988
  • 74000 Series - 1988 (?)
  • Main Series - 1988 to present
  • CD Club - 1989 to 1992, 2001 to present
  • Masters Film Music - 1989 to present (?)
  • Colossal Records - 1989 to 1992

As the Main Series is such a long list, it would probably need its own page (List of Varèse Sarabande Main Series albums). The 47000 and 74000 could probably then go into List of Varèse Sarabande albums (1985 to 1988), and the other series could go into List of Varèse Sarabande albums (1988 to 2009).

Assuming I got the years correct, does anyone have any suggestions or objections about doing things this way? Bettia (bring on the trumpets!) 11:35, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Move all these catalogue lists to another page for VS's catalogues. They should not be on this page. It is far too long and unwieldy. 123.2.117.167 (talk) 19:28, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Necessity of discography

I realise this has been discussed before, but the article is almost comically long because of this label's extensive history. Perhaps it would be better to format the list as expandable tables?

Also I don't see the point in listing the key staff - other articles on labels don't go into nearly as much detail as this one does. Farslayer (talk) 11:11, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Agreed, the discography is both unencyclopedic (WP:RAWDATA) and so long it makes the article nearly impossible to read. Further, as noted above, the information may not even be completely correct, and is entirely unsourced. I would support removing the discography altogether.
To address concerns noted above about how someone took the time to gather the data etc. etc., I would remind editors with such concerns that the information is preserved in the edit history, and would be most appropriate for hosting at another site. —Darkwind (talk) 21:13, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Article split

Since people have been suggesting the article be split for 8 years now, I went ahead and did it. See List of Varèse Sarabande albums. —Darkwind (talk) 08:13, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
