Thanigasalam went to St Joan of Arc Catholic Academy (then known as Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School) and graduated in 2007. He then went on to study at the University of Toronto Scarborough and completed his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. After graduation, Vijay worked as a financial advisor.[2]

Vijay immigrated to Scarborough in 2003 at the age of 14. Just a few days after coming to Canada, he began school at St Joan of Arc Catholic Academy (then known as Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School). He went on to study at the University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus and completed his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Throughout high school and later during university, Vijay worked many part time jobs to help support his family and their transition to this country. After graduation, Vijay worked as a financial advisor at one of Canada’s top banks.

Since coming to Canada, Vijay has been involved in the community in Scarborough and in politics for the last decade. He has always relished the opportunity to give back to the country which welcomed him and his family. At university, he was a youth leader and after graduation he helped as a volunteer leader assisting then Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander.

POLITICS

In 2017, Vijay ran for progressive conservative nomination in the riding of Scarborough–Rouge Park and was elected on the first ballot. On June 7, 2018, Vijay was elected the Member of Provincial Parliament for the riding of Scarborough–Rouge Park. On June 26, 2019 he was appointed the parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Transportation, Caroline Mulroney. On June 2nd 2022, he was re-elected to the Ontario Legislature as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Scarborough Rouge Park. On June 29th 2022, he was appointed the parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure, Kinga Surma.

Throughout his term, Vijay advocated for better transportation in Scarborough. He focused his efforts on a three-stop extension of the Scarborough subway that, once complete, will extend TTC Line 2 by eight kilometres. He supported the expansion of health-care training in Scarborough, arguing that knowledge gained within the community will better serve community members. With UTSC recently announcing plans for a medical academy, Thanigasalam is certain that local students will provide exceptional medical care to their “local multicultural communities.”

In May 2021, the Ontario Legislature unanimously passed Bill 104: Tamil Genocide Education Week Act, a private member’s bill tabled by MPP Vijay Thanigasalam, who is of Tamil descent.

Early Life and Family

Thanigasalam was born in 1989 and moved to Canada with his family when he was 14 years old, escaping the Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka. He attended St Joan of Arc Catholic Academy (then known as Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School) in Scarborough. As a teenager, Thanigasalam dedicated countless hours to volunteering within his community and assisted in door-knocking and canvassing for candidates.

In 2007, he attended Ontario Tech University (formerly known as University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT), and graduated with a Bachelor of Communications degree. Upon graduating, Thanigasalam began establishing a career in the financial sector before entering politics.

Political Career

Vijay Thanigasalam was encouraged to engage in politics by many members of the community. He won the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario nomination in the riding of Scarborough - Rouge Park in 2017.

Thanigasalam went on to win the newly formed riding of Scarborough - Rouge Park in the 2018 Ontario General Elections becoming one the first Tamil-Canadians to assume provincial office in Canada.

On June 26, 2019 Thanigasalam was appointed as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, Honourable Caroline Mulroney.

Accomplishments

As the parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, Thanigasalam has worked on various files none more important than delivering the long awaited Scarborough Subway Extension to the residents of Scarborough.

In October 2020, Thanigasalam introduced Bill 223, Highway Traffic Amendment Act (Electronic Logging Devices) that amends the Highway Traffic Act to require that operators ensure that each commercial motor vehicle that is under their control is equipped with an electronic logging device.

Vijay Thanigasalam introduced Bill 104 - Tamil Genocide Education Week and the Bill received unanimous support and received Royal Assent on May 12th, 2021. An achievement that was supported by thousands of Tamil-Canadians in his riding and across the province.

In September 2021, Thanigasalam was instrumental in securing provincial funding for a New Community Centre for his riding of Scarborough-Rouge Park. This will bring much needed services for marginalized communities in Scarborough.
