I have conflicting information about where the name Rawhide railroad came from. One source claims that the rail straps were tied to the early wooden rails to begin with. Another source (Eugene Register-Guard - Dec 10, 1967) states that raw hide was used as a temporary fix for snakeheads.

Of interest two sources say the pilots/cowcatchers on the locomotives were removed and replaced by trained dogs to chase livestock from in front of the train. DieselDude (talk) 22:01, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
