"Knowing he cannot go home, James stays to play with Peter as his new 'enemy' Captain Hook..."[edit]
I admittedly cannot prove it, because I have no way of seeing the movie again, right now. But I am 100% sure that I heard one of the kids in the closing montage say something about seeing "Uncle James" in the near future, which I would interpet to mean that what Peter actually did was inspire James to return with the others, by setting him up as a particularly revered figure in the group and showing him that he could still enjoy being with them.
