African American History Wikipedia Editathon 2020[edit]

Whangdoodle more common than Wang Doodle[edit]

My library has temporary access to some historic newspapers. A search revealed several citations to the newspaper "The Freeman: An illustrated Colored Newspaper". According to one article that mentions the WhangDoodle Trio, they may have been a traveling company and minstrel show in addition to band - at least for a time period. However, I have only found one paragraph about this, so I'm still researching this possibility. --Bridges2Information (talk) 01:18, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

- In 1900/1901 (maybe longer?) F.R. Brooks performed with a circus sideshow managed by PG Lowery. It's interesting to note that the Freeman newspaper (a national newspaper distributed out of Inadianapolis Indiana with a primarily Black readership) notes, "As you know this is not a minstrel show; we have made good everywhere we have been."Bridges2Information (talk) 20:31, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

After reviewing primary newspaper sources from the "Washington Digital Newspapers" project, it appears the correct spelling of the name is "Whangdoodle". Examples:

"Whangdoodle Quintet" The Seattle Star 11 February 1914
"Whangdoodle Quartet" The Spokane Press 25 July 1908
"Whangdoodle Quintet" The Seattle Star 1 February 1915
"Whangdoodle Four" The Seattle Republican 27 December 1907
"Whangdoodle Entertainers" The Seattle Star 15 September 1916
"Whangdoodle Trio" The Seattle Republican 31 May 1907
"The Whangdoodle Minstrels" The San Juan Islander 7 March 1913

Article Title[edit]

Changing the article title to "Whangdoodle Entertainers". This will align with primary newspaper sources of the 1910s from Seattle. This is the last known name of the group, however, the word "entertainers" is a useful word for subsuming the titles "trio, quartet, etc". Bridges2Information (talk)
