I'm a bit confused by the bit about alum. Firstly, is the place called "Sands", 3 miles from Whitby, a real place, or is it Sandsend? Is this an old usage, or a different place (and if so where is it?) or a typo??

In any case, I have unlinked Sands as it was just rather unhelpfully going to the page about - well, Sand! If it should be linked to anywhere it should be to a page about the place, like Sands, Yorkshire or Sandsend, Yorkshire or whatever, I'd have thought. 138.37.188.109 12:00, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

    • Quite right, I've included he modern form, "Sandsend Ness". Thanks for that. Wikityke 23:45, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

You should talk more about the connection with Lieutenant James Cook, who was from the area, and joined the Navy in Whitby, fought in the Seven Years War, and went on to explore the South Pacific, claim Australia for England, etc. Further, HM Bark Endeavour was originally a merchant collier named Earl of Pembroke, whose construction was completed by early 1768 at Whitby, North Yorkshire. --Sean01 11:01, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

I operate a web site which has a pretty comprehensive directory of the local businesses in and around Whitby along with a large photo gallery, local classified ads, community forum, local links and local information. It's become the most popular web based community web site for the Whitby area... I'm pretty sure it's worth of a link in the external links section. But it does contain a quite substantial number of adverts sponsored directly by local businesses, and a couple of Google AdWords ads... I guess these ads mean a link to it violates the WikiPedia rules, but it seems a shame - I think its highly relevant/pertinent. According to the WikiPedia recommendations, because the site is my own I'm meant to discuss the link in here and then if any neutral wikipedians think it's appropriate, they can add the link. The web site in question is here www.whitbyonline.co.uk.

Agreed. The site you've linked to, while containing a fair few ads, does seem to contain a lot of pertinent info besides the ads, plus the forum is quite lively with local chat. All of the ads appear to be for local (Whitby) businesses also. I'll add the link for you.

I've also broken the external links section up into 3 different sections to make it more clear what type of information the links are linking to.

Monkey business

Can someone ask a local historian in Whitby whether The Whitby Incident is true or not?

I am sure it is a hoax. The text should be removed.--Bryson 23:57, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
To me, it's obviously a misplacing of the Hartlepool monkey, and I've removed it from here. .. dave souza, talk 12:27, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Whitby jet

Im not sure jet is classed as amber ?

Famous Whitby Residents

I see from the New Oxford Dictionary of National Biography that Whitby has some eighty entries for eminent people linked to Whitby. I'm surprised that there isn't a famous residents feature.

Mrs Gaskell, Storm Jameson, Mary Linskill, Wilkie Collins, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Lewis Carroll, James Russell Lowell (as well as Bram Stoker) are literary people who spring to mind, - and the Scoresby connection is surely worth mentioning.

Suggested improvements

It seems to me Whitby could do with a lot of work. I'll make a start sometime, but here are some suggestions of what's missing, that has a relevant relationship to the town and should be included or linked

Larpool Viaduct (linking to into article on John Wadddell and Larpool_Viaduct, Whitby Gazette, The Swing Bridge, Royal Cresent, Cliff Lift, Spa Theatre & Pavillion, Whitby's long and hateful relationship with Scarborough Council, Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, William Scoresby, Bothams Bakers, TV Series Heartbeat, North Yorks Moors railway (now running trains into Whitby), The Esk Valley & associatedvillages Musicport (outdated, festival leaving the town), Whitby Lit and Phil Society, Whitby's TV transmitter & the farce in the town over its movement away from the abbey, The history of thr crow's nest Whitby Rotary clubs (Whitby and Whitby Endevour) Whitby Lions

Maniac Pony 17:27, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Maniac Pony's list, and am happy to divvy up the list if you'd like help. The Port section also needs updating - commercial ships very rarely visit these days.

With Regards to the Berry Banks Cottage Link: www.berrybankscottage.com

Sorry I didn't see your message, as I have only just started using Wikipedia and don't really know my way around it. But please read what I have to say and consider this:

I feel that the site we have built is very informative, and if you care to look through the site you will find that there is a lot of information about Whitby as a town. The information is presented in a very easy to follow way, and is a useful resource to people when looking into or considering going to Whitby. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathankrawczuk (talkcontribs) 14:53, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Removal of Whitby Business Directory link

The opening paragraph states

The Whitby Business Directory was created for the businesses and the people of Whitby and the surrounding area. We are specialists in Internet business marketing and web design and offer great value and a unique service.

this is adverising, is it not?--Harkey Lodger (talk) 09:43, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree, the second sentence at least should be removed. Sounds like it's taken straight from another source. Schumi555 (talk) 16:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

External Link to Whitby Online

A link to the Whitby Online homepage has been present in the "tourism" section of this page for many years.

Whitby Online does contain some adverts, but it is a bit of a Whitby institution, and does contain a vast amount of useful local information and features.

Among other things, it contains news, weather, travel information, forums, photo gallery, information about surfing, walking, fishing and diving, local clubs and societies, museums and churches - and a very thorough, locally supported, directory of businesses - most with direct links to the websites of those businesses.

Any comprehensive page of information about Whitby would be incomplete without a link to this site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.206.249.102 (talk) 14:43, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Good idea to discuss it here rather than in competing edit summaries. I still believe that whitbyonline, as a business directory, exists primarily to provide links to local businesses, and that it contains mainly advertising. As such I think it falls squarely into number 5 on the list of links normally to be avoided . I do not think that the fact that this inappropriate link has been there for four years is an argument to keep it there any longer.
Perhaps there is a page in the site with information that adds information that would be useful to the reader of an encyclopaedia article. I couldn't find one on a quick browse, but if there is one, then I suggest you put in a link direct to that page. The home page is 90% advertising, and adds no encyclopaedic information at all. Grafen (talk) 22:45, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Here's some links to pages of information which would be very useful and appropriate in a section entitled "Tourist Information" in a section called "External Links"

Plastic-bag free

In a campaign led by Whitby's Friends of the Earth group, Whitby is looking to make the exciting and forward-thinking move of becoming one of a growing number of UK towns to be plastic bag-free, instead encouraging the use of re-usable shopping bags made of cotton or other materials. This move is hoped to help preserve the beautiful setting that has made the town so attractive to tourists.

"the exciting and forward-thinking move" seems rather over the top to me, as well feeling rather POV.

But I'm afraid "Whitby is looking to make the exciting and forward-thinkng move..." just isn't noteworthy. Maybe if Whitby had actually made the move to being plastic bag free I would have left the para and just deleted the unnecessary rhetoric, but just thinking about it? Non-notable, I'm afraid. Would I be justified in adding a link to a video tour of Whitby?

Hello, I was just about to link to the following webpage http://www.coastlineuncut.com/england-coast-towns.php?locid=81&newsearch=true but saw a notice suggesting caution about adding more links to the article. The website has Google adverts but provides a fairly detailed tour of Whitby. What do people think? Coastlover (talk) 20:32, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Images

This article, especially near the bottom, seems to be crammed full of images, while a place like Whitby has a lot to look at, the page already has a photo gallery and is still cramped - wht do people think about removing some images? Jiminizer (talk) 05:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

I would remove the image sizing as a first step as that may be causing problems. Then possibly move some down to gallery to fill-up the gap on last row. Keith D (talk) 10:46, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
I've moved some of the images down into the photo gallery and removed a photo of east cliff as a very similar picture exists in the gallery in better detail. I think it's improved the layout, especially around the schools section which no longer has a large block of whitespace breaking it up. Jiminizer (talk) 03:57, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Was it called "Whitby" even before the Danish Invasion?

"Whitby" is a sign of a Danish respectively of an Old-Norse origin of the town, isn't it? But the Vikings did not start founding any settlements in Britain before the 9th century, did they? Or were there Danish settlements in Britain even before 800 AD?

O.K., now it's clear. Thank you for writing it into the article.

Alum and Thomas Chaloner

"Chaloner secretly brought some of the Pope's workmen to England to develop a thriving alum industry in Yorkshire. (It is said that this significantly lowered the international price of alum, impacting the profitability of a traditional source of revenue for the Vatican)."

That a single book is given as reference to Chaloner's exploits is fair enough, but to add a section beginning "It is said..." is not.

I removed the statement about Chaloner' excommunication because, 1) it's not known the bias of the writer in such an old reference book (1833) 2) Chaloner could not have been excommunicated by the Pope - he had already accepted the English monarch as head of the Church in England 3) there is no specific reference to it.

What is not mentioned in the Wiki page is that once the alum industry around Whitby had begun, the English Crown imposed its own monopoly - imports from abroad were banned. Francis Hannaway 21:08, 3 August 2010 (UTC) Francis Hannaway (talk)

I think this guy deserves a mention. But where and how? Also 19th and 20th century history are a bit sparse, any sources, please.--Harkey (talk) 16:32, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I'd probably put Sutcliffe in Culture.--J3Mrs (talk) 17:10, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
There are currently 34 people in Category:People from Whitby so may be worth setting up a List of people from Whitby article that could be used as a link from the People section. Keith D (talk) 17:30, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
I was a bit worried about opening the flood gates on a People section. The Culture idea was one I had thought of but needed to check out. And, yes, a List article is a good idea.--Harkey (talk) 17:36, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
I too dislike those notable? people sections but he looks ok in culture. --J3Mrs (talk) 17:45, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I have set up Category:Whitby to group related articles together. Please add to articles as appropriate. Keith D (talk) 12:38, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Problem

They sold it to Sir Richard Cholmley, the lessee of the site.

This is as per the reference given but I was going to wikilink Richard Cholmley which redirects to Richard Cholmondeley. The problem is that his article gives his date of death as 1521 which is before the 1550s timeframe we are talking about in the town section of the article. Any thoughts? Keith D (talk) 21:51, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

The Genuki site says Sir Hugh Cholmeley bought it from Sir Edward Yorke You pays yer money and you takes yer pick!! I thing there were several families/branches of Cholmelys about. I'll investigate further, later--Harkey (talk) 00:02, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I think the wikilink is to a descendant of the aforementioned Richard. Hugh and Richard were sommon names in this family.--J3Mrs (talk) 08:37, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Looks as though it was Sir Richard (II) in 1555--Harkey (talk) 19:00, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
