WHO MADE WHO[edit]

it's obviously about a man screwed up in life because he doesn't know who his father is, due to his mother being a prostetute.

MIKE

WHO MADE WHO continued[edit]

Also the man cheated on his wife - Nothing gonna save your one last dime cause it owns you, through and through. Kicks you round the world, there ain't a thing that it can't do.

So his Wife ends up divorcing him - The databank knows my number, says I gotta pay cause I made the grade last year.

Now he is deppressed and possibly going to commit suicide - Running out of chips, you got no line in an 8-bit town So don't look down.

MIKE

Meaning[edit]

Hey Mike I think the lyrics are "naked town" not "8-bit town". Interesting interpretation of the lyrics though. I keep wondering if this song is supposed to mean anything or if they just needed some vocals so they made up stuff that rhymed. -Carl

Meaning of "Who Made Who"[edit]

This discussion on the meaning of the song is interesting, but I think you may have missed the mark.

The references to video games, databank, satellites, dynamo, chips, 8-bit, turn the screw, etc. all imply that the song is about [computer] technology, at least at face value. The implications of the song are concern over a theme of becoming too reliant on technology. If we made computers, and we have given them control over our finances, records, identities, power grids, military, etc., who is the master and who is the slave? and at what cost? c.f. the following movies: the Matrix, Terminator, and obviously, Maximum Overdrive. "If you made them and they made you / Who picked up the bill, And who made who?"

Perhaps one implied meaning of the song is about addictions. Things that make it easier to cope with the hardships in life have a tendency to occupy more and more resources over time and become increasingly irreplaceable to a point of ignoring everything else to feed the need. "...because it owns you - through and through."

There are further philosophical implications about the creation of man and God (and who made who), but who knows, maybe it is actually about a hooker's bastard child (although I do not believe that that is obvious).

The rhyme scheme is catchy, too.
