The Iran-Contra Affair
The Iran-Contra affair, while a subtopic of his career in the CIA, is nevertheless the single most controversial and publicly noted aspect of his life, in virtually all biographies. Some suspected, with reason, that he was the mastermind of this historic criminal venture in U.S. foreign affairs, as reflected in the cited official reports and major media sources.
The pull quote that I excerpted, from the official final report of the Independent Counsel (special prosecutor) investigating the Iran-Contra Affair, may seem exceptionally long, but it is actually a fairly concise summary of the decisive issues swirling around Casey and the questions of his involvement in what would have been, had he lived, possibly a criminal case that would have put him in prison for the rest of his life.
Consequently, since the investigative findings have raised the possibility that he was the key party in the greatest scandal of the Reagan administration, this full quote is necessary and appropriate to put context to this most exceptionally historic and defining event of his career -- the investigation of which was intimately entangled with his collapse and death.
