Willy Wonka Candy Company

Do you think this section should be broken into its own seperate article? Zzyzx11 (Talk) 02:15, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

No. (Ibaranoff24 19:29, 12 October 2005 (UTC))

Page Layout

I moved the first picture so that the Wilder picture wouldn't overlay the first line of text in the second section in some browsers. (It was doing it with my copy of IE 6.) --Gentaur 16:50, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Rude

Has anyone commented that - like some other Roald Dahl characters - his name is actually quite rude? Willy = penis, and Wonka = wanker. 62.6.139.11 04:55, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

A double double entendre, eh? Are those slang terms used in the UK? 203.76.230.253 07:07, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Willy is. Wonka just sounds like "Wanker" but it is known. I once had a screen name Fat Wonka (in homage to the movie, however and what happens if you each to much chocolate) and my ISP deleted it 74.65.39.59 13:41, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Amazing Chocolatier?

I removed the paranthetical phrase "(also known as the amazing chocolatier)" from the first section of the article; the epithet is never seen in the book or 1971 musical but placement in the article suggested it existed in all versions of the character, and I couldn't find a proper place in the Film Adaptations section to move it. Anyone knows a better place to mention this particular title for Wonka is encouraged to put it there. :) 76.243.94.92 (talk) 10:43, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Lessons

From the character description from the 1970s film: "Similar to the original book, however he tends to be more out to teach children life lessons than Dahl's original"

How so? The stories are almost identical, and throughout the movie he says and does little to suggest that he is attempting to teach anyone a lesson, he simply does little to dissuade the children from getting themselves into dangerous situations as a result of their own irresponsible behavior. Also, when put into the context of the film, this is justified at least in part by the fact that his main goal involves finding an heir, so interfering with the childrens' behavior would contaminate his search or, if you will, contest. In the film the only ones who seem interested in "teaching lessons" are the Oompa Loompas, who sing songs preaching about the dangers of a bad habits, and that the key to happiness is a virtuous lifestyle. Still, we can not allow this to reflect on Mr. Wonka, for while they are all connected, WIlly WOnka and the Oompa Loompas are two separate entities, each with their own notable characteristics.

Unless anyone has any objections I'm editing the statement in the article.

Random line of text?

What is up with this? "But a few original Wonka candy bars were preserved. The candy was still in its original packaging, and the chocolate still the same as the person bought it. This was a remarkable discovery." And why is it just thrown into the middle of nowhere? —Preceding unsigned comment added by CrazyOmega (talkcontribs) 00:25, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

What's a Schnozberry?

I am not a very good writer, but maybe someone should put "Schnozberry" in Wikipedia.

Just a thought. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bakerjadey (talkcontribs) 20:09, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Worth mentioning?

I was wondering if the fake trailer for "Gobstopper" would count as "Other appearances"--BruceGrubb (talk) 06:22, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Willy Wonka's name

It's my understanding that the name is a deliberately rude reference by Dahl to 'willy' (i.e. penis) and 'wanking' (i.e. masturbation). In the years before Dahl's death some UK newspapers reported that schools had had some difficult experiences with him pushing the boundaries on acceptable references to this particular topic -- more childish than sinister. It also explains the bemusement that met the US decision to retitle the book & movie, thinking that 'Charlie...' might be seen as some kind of drugs reference and thus going for 'Willy Wonka...' instead.Mrstonky (talk) 17:33, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Condescending Wonka

Should something about the Condescending Wonka internet meme be added? Coreythenerd (talk) 13:41, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

In my opinion, no -- not notable enough, and it would need some serious secondary sourcing to prove otherwise. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 16:25, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Wonka in the books

No mention of the character as he appears in the books? I should think someone would have analysed it. GraemeLeggett (talk) 18:08, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Untitled

Why is this article treating the Johnny Depp version as if it were the definitive version?--Drvanthorp (talk) 19:41, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Willy Wonka of the Books - section needed?

This article is completely missing anything on the character from the two books, it only covers adaptations. Should really have something on the book character first, no? Carty239 (talk) 15:58, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Shortening the 1971 film adaptation-part

I was wondering if the 1971 film adaptation part isn't too extensive as the whole plot of the movie is in it. Shouldn't it be focused on the portrayal of Wonka in this movie? For the full story people should go to the page of the movie, I think.Dianafl (talk) 12:28, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Condescending Wonka revisited

I saw in the archives, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Willy_Wonka/Archive_1#Condescending_Wonka a post about the Condescending Wonka posted in 2012. 5 years had passed and I wonder if it's more notable now? The Condesending Wonka meme is as popular at the Hitler Downfall parodies clips. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/condescending-wonka-creepy-wonka --Sd-100 (talk) 11:31, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Clean up

This article needs some serious copy-editing. It's mixing up the character with different portrayals and is confusing to the lay reader in when it's referring to the character from the books that Dahl created, and the interpretations by different actors. Lava Lamps (talk) 19:37, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Alzheimer's

Wilder himself considered the role to be one of his signature roles, with his next of kin noting that he purposely kept his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease private because so many young children would recognize him on the street as Wonka and he wanted those encounters to be joyful experiences.[14]

What is this saying, exactly? That Wilder had Alzheimer's during the filming? This movie is now 50 years old, and Wilder is still giving interviews. That's not a credible assertion (that he had Alzheimer's in 1971).

Semi-protected edit request on 1 August 2023

It just so happens to turn out that Maurice LaMarche didn’t do the voice of Willy Wonka in the commercials, according to Behind the voice actors.com here:https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/commercials/Wonka/, it was actually Jess Harnell that did the voice instead. I know the article is probably from vandalism, but is there any chance someone can correct this mistake in the voice actors section in the infobox? Because it’s wrong. 2607:FB91:21CF:AEEF:55D6:428B:7042:4894 (talk) 23:56, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Not done: That doesn't look like the greatest source. But neither are any of the others I can find [1] and [2], but they all name him as the voice actor for Wonka in those commercials. So I will leave as is unless you can find a far more reliable source which says otherwise. Xan747 (talk) 20:51, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

The picture representing Willy Wonka should be changed.

The photo currently attached is a popular image of Gene Wilder in the role of Willy Wonka. But Roald Dahl, the creator of the character and original writer of the book the character came from, heavily disliked the adaptation and Gene Wilder in the role of Willy Wonka, because Dahl believed he didn't fit the role at all. So I believe that the picture should be changed to an illustration from the first edition of the book made by Joseph Schindelman. Vbokivs (talk) 05:06, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
