Village?[edit]

Withington a village? I'm not entirely sure about that. I thought of it more as a suburban area of the city. A village (to myself as a geographer) implies something rather different than what Withington is. Open for discussion... --Jza84 |  Talk  14:05, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It sort of is, sort of isn't. Change it to dormitory village? Rudget. 14:06, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about Urban village? I'm cringing at that suggestion though, but it could be a suitable compromise. I'm just a little uncomfortable that "village" proper, refers to a standalone settlement that is not part of an urban sprawl. What does citation say? --Jza84 |  Talk  14:10, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not much (the ones provided down the page anyway) – I agree village does seem to reflect more a rural definition, so maybe urban village is just what we need. Rudget. 14:12, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've found:
There are others according to a Google search for "Withington is a"... ([1]). If local convention is for "village", then I'd stick with it (grudgingly!), but it might be worth adding it with some other term like "suburban-", "inner-city-" or something along those lines, for context. --Jza84 |  Talk  14:20, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Suburb might be the best option for now, until we can find more sources. You may ask MF for advice on naming coventions, he's pretty good with that sort of thing. Rudget. 14:30, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I quite like village, but I can also see why from a technical point of view it may be seen as dubious. Urban Village does just about cut it, but I agree that as a term it is somewhat cringeworthy. Alternatively we could always try and get away with [[Urban village|village]](?)
Suburb would do, but I also think that with that you are still in a grey area as you risk people arguing that Withington could be classed as still being in the Inner city rather than suburbia, and that's something that is somewhat of an opinionated point which you can't really define encyclopaedically (my own opinion is that Manchester suburbia starts at about Parrs Wood distance, but I'm sure many others would disagree.
Of course Withington is quite widely referred to as a village colloquially, in particular the main Wilmslow Road stretch, but thus far I have little to back that up citation wise other than original research :(. Still, I think there is grounds for looking for some definitive citation(s) on this point. -- Fursday 23:20, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello-I think the 1911 date cited for Wittgenstein's stay in Withington is way too late. I think he left in 1910 at the latest or even 1909. He was listed as a student in Manc long after he'd actually left. His experiments at Glossop were in the Summer of 1908. Perhaps the Wittgensteinians can sort this..! Whereof I cannot speak, thereof I must shut my fat face up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pot-bellied fool (talkcontribs) 01:24, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]

Withington is located in Manchester
Withington
Withington
Withington, shown within Manchester.

I'm struggling to include this in the article (specifically the Geography section) as it currently exists as it causes item-conflict/white space, so, I've put it here on the talk page. I'm not sure how helpful it is (as it's not too far removed from the county-wide infobox map), but it's something to consider as an option for the various districts of Manchester. --Jza84 |  Talk  15:59, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I like it, though I think it would be useful to also add a second, much more zoomed-in map as well, showing the immediately surrounding "villages" - Fallowfield, Burnage, Didsbury, West Didsbury, Whalley Range etc. That would act as a nice replacement to that hideous compass box contraption. Perhaps if we had two maps, they could sit side-by-side with no text surrounding them, solving the white space problem? -- Fursday 23:24, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unemployment[edit]

The article states that 44% of the population of Withington are unemployed. Surely some mistake? Ausseagull (talk) 06:34, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

date cited for Wittgenstein's stay is incorrect.[edit]
