Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on July 7, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that passengers mourned the closure of the Wolverton to Newport Pagnell Line so much that they poured a bucket of water over a double dressed as Richard Beeching, associated with closure of British railway lines in the 1960s?

Comment[edit]

Why is there no mention of the local nickname for this line and/or the train that ran on it? "Nobby Newport" or "Newport Nobby" was nearly always used to refer to the route. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.211.193 (talk) 09:48, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to add any sourced relevant information you want. If I have the time, I'll try to add something about the nickname soon. Thanks. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 14:10, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

M1[edit]

"The opening of the M1 motorway in 1959 seriously diminished the line's traffic." - really? I haven't put a fact tag on this because I doubt there is a citation. My inclination is to delete - the para doesn't need it. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 14:26, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review[edit]

This review is transcluded from Talk:Wolverton to Newport Pagnell Line/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Comments:

  1. The lead of the article is very short, Per WP:LEAD, the lead is supposed to be a sufficient summary of what is presented in the article.
  2. Citations should not be in the lead.
  3. What is LNWR an abbreviation for? This should be indicated.
  4. "The canal closed in 1864.[1] Despite this, the railway when built did not run on the line of the old canal.[1]": If both sentences use the same source, it only needs to be indicated once.
  5. "4 miles (6.4 km)" should have the adjective parameter on.
  6. In sentence "The water supply for locomotives at Wolverton was insufficient, so a water column was built at the intermediate station of Bradwell.", "of" should be "in".
  7. In sentence "Water came from the town's own supply, with many houses losing their supply.", you use "supply" twice. Can more variety in wording be used?
  8. Combine the sentences "Despite this, the LNWR considered electrification of the line in 1904, believing such a scheme would bring about considerable savings. The idea never materialised."
  9. Are there any historical picutures of the railroad that can be added to the article?

I am placing the article on hold. Dough4872 (talk) 23:20, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't really think of anything else to put in the lead. Also, what do you mean by 'adjective parameter' for the convert template? I can't find any images either. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 23:41, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since the major issues have been resolved, I will pass the article. Dough4872 (talk) 00:17, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts[edit]

The web references and Henshaw's book need publishers and ref 10 needs (a) page number(s). Cheers Ollie! :) —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:57, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, what does "routes" mean here? "In 1898, the first motor bus service in Buckinghamshire began running between Newport Pagnell and Olney,[3] followed by numerous other routes, which took traffic away from the railway line." —Ed (TalkContribs) 04:17, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bus routes. I suppose I should explain that... Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 04:24, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Surely someone can find a better image? Andrewjlockley (talk) 14:11, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a pic of Bradwell Halt - any better?
